the Bush administration and
his actions which many
American officials privately
charged raised questions
about his overall commit-
ment to Israel's own election
proposal.
Because of that shabby
treatment, many of Shamir's
aides and several Cabinet
ministers had recommended
that the prime minister
simply avoid stopping over
in Washington.
But while that may have
won Shamir some points in
the Likud and soothed his
pride, he correctly
understood that it would
result in a major and public
rupture in U.S.-Israel rela-
tions.
He told his aides that he
was willing to sacrifice his
feelings to serve the overall
national interest. He wanted
to ease tensions with the
administration, and this was
his opportunity. He has suc-
ceeded —temporarily. ❑

Jerusalem — In a swoop on
bus terminals and spots
where soldiers gather,
military police arrested
1,260 sloppily-dressed troops
Sunday.
The operation was part of
country-wide campaign for
the enforcement of army
dress codes. All those ar-
rested were given quick
disciplinary trials. Espe-
cially well-dressed soldiers
were given chits that they
could trade for pairs of
cinema tickets.

Kahane's Kach party has
claimed responsibility for
setting fire to the door of a
Kiryat Arba family's home,
saying that Arabs lodging
there were only pretending
to cooperate with Israelis.
The Halperin family put
the fire out unaided and said
they would continue to host
the Arabs, despite the oppo-
sition of what they called a
"handful of fanatics" in
Kiryat Arba.
