Large Figurine
Found In Israel
Jerusalem (JTA) — Ar-
chaeological excavations in
the area of Kibbutz Sha'ar
Hagolan this past season
have added considerable in-
formation about the people
who inhabited that part of
northern Israel 7,000 to
8,000 years ago.
Remnants were found of
two rectangular stone struc-
tures, giving evidence of a
stable, permanent dwelling
site. Previous discoveiies in
the area testified to a
nomadic way of life.
The most exotic find was
the largest stone figurine
that can be attributed to the
neolithic people who lived in
the area between 5,000 and
6,000 BCE.
About 100 figurines have
been found at Sha'ar
Hagolan over the years,
most of them 2 to 2.5 inches
high.
UAHC Backs
Armenia Day
New York (JTA) — The
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations last week
became the first Jewish
organization to urge the
creation of a national day of
remembrance of the Arme-
nian genocide of 1915-1923.
In a resolution signed Nov.
6 in New Orleans; the
UAHC resolved to promote
the passage of a Senate Joint
Resolution designating a
day to commemorate the
75th anniversary of the
Armenian massacre.
"The massacre of over 1.5
million Armenians, beginn-
ing in 1915 by the Ottoman
Turks, and the subsequent
exile of an additional
500,000 Armenians, is one of
the most shameful chapters
in modern history," the
UAHC resolution declares.
