National Population
Study Next Spring

ALAN HITSKY

Associate Editor

D

etroiters, par-
ticipating in their
own Jewish popula-
tion survey this month, may
have another chance — on a
broader scale — to present
their views on the Jewish
community.
The Council of Jewish
Federations is completing
plans to implement a na-
tional study of the Jewish
population next spring. By
April, 100,000 households
across North America will
be randomly telephoned.
Researchers expect to reach
4,000 persons who consider
themselves Jewish, and will
followup the initial calls
with a detailed telephone
survey of the 4,000.
"We have 120 questions,"
said Dr. Sidney Goldstein of
Brown University, chairman
of CJF's advisory committee
on population studies. Dr.
Steven Cohen of Queens Col-
lege said the researchers
will gain invaluable data on
"the health of American
Jewry and their basic stance
on issues which affects
policy decisions."
Dr. Barry Kosmin of the
North American Jewish
Data Bank quoted statistics
from previous studies:
•47 percent of Jews con-
sider themselves Jewish by
religion. The figure is 66
percent in Maryland, 36 per-
cent in California and 28
percent in Arizona.
• 40 percent of Jewish
households contain at least
one person who identifies as
a Christian.
•Jews by religion tend to
be older than the national
average„ more educated,
more well-to-do, have fewer
children and live in the Nor-
theast.
• 93.4 percent of religious
Jews are white.
Dr. Cohen said he hopes
the national study will shed
light on the religion of
children of mixed marriages,
the Jewish brith rate, the
impact of day schools and
supplementary schools, teen
affiliation with the Jewish
community, and intermar-
riage rates — which appear
to be much higher west of
the Missippi River.
"Younger Jews are less
attached to Jewish philan-
thropic life," Dr. Cohen said.
Jewish religious denomina-
tions are changing dramati-
cally, with the Orthodox
becoming "more vigorous,

more vital and insular," the
Reform becoming more tra-
ditional and the Conser-
vative "no longer Conser-
vative by default."
He said there is a high
level of singlehood among
Jewish women in their 30s,
which he attributed to their
upward mobility and unwill-
ingness to marry beneath
their level. "There are more
divorced and never-marrieds
among the highly educated,"
he said.
Other trends Cohen men-
tioned include:
• Single Jewish men seem
alienated from Jewish life.
• People are critical of
Israel's policies, but are
positive about Israel.
• Yoimger people are less
attached to Israel and the
percentage who feel strongly
about Israel drops five per-
cent in each successive
generation. ❑

Jet Lag
In Advance

Council of Jewish Federa-
tions discussions started at
Metropolitan Airport for
some Detroit delegates fly-
ing to the General Assembly
meetings in Cincinnati last
week.
One flight carrying Jewish
Welfare Federation Presi-
dent Mark Schlussel and
new Executive Vice Presi-
dent Robert Arronson was
delayed three hours on the
runway awaiting takeoff. A
second flight waited one
hour on the tarmac, osten-
sibly for a major storm front
to pass.
Coming home Friday was
no easier for some travelers.
Elevators at one convention
hotel stopped working for 30
minutes. Harried passengers
on one flight rushed to make
their plane, only to wait 40
minutes on the runway
awaiting clearance from air
traffic control.
