Snowbirds Now the Oak Park native is home as the new U.S. at- torney for the Eastern District of Michigan, hoping to help combat violent crime. "Our society is beset by in- tolerant levels of violent crime," Markman said. "My No. 1 priority is to make a contribution to reducing levels of firearm use and drugs in day-to-day crime." Markman said the eastern district court has implemented policies that "restrict the extent that we will engage in plea bargain- ing. We are more prepared to go to trial." He added that he is trying to impose stricter penalties for those offenders who use drugs and weapons while committing a crime. Punishment includes pre- trial detention and the max- imum possible sentences. "The combination of drugs and. guns contribute enor- mously to violent crime," Markman said. "If the laws allowed for longer sentences for these offenders, we would do it." Markman, a araduate of Oak Park High 6School, left the state to attend Duke University in 1967. After graduating from the Univer- sity of Cincinnati law school, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked in the legal department for several government departments. Among his positions, Markman headed the U.S. Department of Justice's Of- fice of Legal Policy and was chief counsel and staff direc- tor for the U.S. Subcom- mittee on the Constitution. —KL Machon LITorah Sets Programs Machon IfIbrah, the Jewish Learning Network of Michigna, will host a discus- sion on the Jewish way in love and intimacy titled, "The River, The Kettle and The Bird," 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at Machon.
