gle-family homes as it is
zoned, the property owners
could better develop the site,
Varjabedian said. Otherwise
condominiums might be the
best use.
Board members Hammond
and Law both said after the
meeting they voted against
the special use permit
because the synagogue
would interfere with the de-
velopment of the other site.
The board's decision leaves
B'nai Moshe officials
wondering what to do next.
Robert Roth, former
synagogue president, said
the first option is getting a
board member who voted
against the proposal to
reconsider the decision. The
board could reconsider as
soon as Dec. 4.
"We are attempting to
seek any avenues for recon-
sideration," Roth said.
Roth will not rule out the
possibility of taking the
board to court to overturn
the decision.

"We are obviously
very disappointed,
even angry, but we
have every
intention to see the
process through."

"I am exploring that op-
tion right now," he said.
Chances are no new site
plan will be drawn.
"There is nothing wrong
with the site plan," Roth
said. "It was not rejected
because of the site plan."
Roth is not sure yet if the
synagogue will follow
through on its option to pur-
chase the 15-acre West
Bloomfield site. The land
and the new building are ex-
pected to cost more than $5
million.
"We will try to extend that
purchase option for a month,
but beyond that I cannot
say," Roth said.
B'nai Moshe still plans to
complete a deal to sell its
facility at. Ten Mile and
Church roads in Oak Park
for $1.6 million to United
Jewish Charities, the prop-
erty and endowment agency
for the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration.
Synagogue officials knew
they would need temporary
housing for about two years
even if the board approved
the proposal, Roth said. He
hopes this setback will not
increase the time necessary
for temporary housing.
At this point, B'nai Moshe
is not ready to give up on the
West Bloomfield site.
"We are obviously very

disappointed, even angry,
but we have every intention
to see the process through,"
he said.
Rabbi Allan Meyerowitz
said although this is a major
setback "everything is still a
go. We will bounce back."
In the meantime, the
Lubavitch Foundation can
go ahead with plans for an
educational and religious
retreat after board members
voted 3-2 against a proposal
to exempt colleges and uni-
versities in an area zoned for
single-family use. If the pro-
posal had passed it would
have prevented the founda-
tion from building its retreat
in the area unless the land
was rezoned to multi-family
use.
Rabbi Yitschak Kagan
said the foundation has no
site plan yet for the 40-acre
parcel it owns west of the
Jewish Community Center,
but plans to work with West
Bloomfield Township in a
few months to preserve the
wetlands and woods within
the site. ❑
