IDA SWARTZ, 77, of Royal Oak, died Nov. 15. Lewis Zumberg Lewis Zumberg, former owner of Atlas Coverall Supp- ly Company in Detroit, died Nov. 19. He was 76. Mr. Zumberg, a former Detroiter of Pembroke Pines, Fla., was born and raised in Detroit. After retiring from business 20 years ago, Mr. Zumberg, after selling the business, worked as a starter for the Evergreen Hills Golf Course in Southfield. He was also a member of Pisgah Lodge of B'nai B'rith and the Knights of Phythias. He leaves his wife, Bessie Hilda; three sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald of Southfield, Steven and Sharon of Huntington Woods and Marvin of Southfield; three sisters and brothers-in- law, Mary and Nathan Trager of Farmington Hills, Dora and Ben Stern of Sunrise, Fla., and Lillian Jacobs of New Jersey; and one grand- daughter. Services and inter- ment in Detroit. David Blumberg David Blumberg, a former head of B'nai B'rith Interna- tional, died Nov. 1 in Washington. He was 78. Blumberg was the 19th president of BBI, serving three terms in that capacity between 1971 and 1978. A retired insurance agent, Blumberg was a veteran of service to Jewish organiza- tions, having also served as vice chairman of the World Conference of Jewish Organizations, the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council and the Na- tional Conference on Soviet Jewry. He was also a member of the board of trustees of the American Friends of Hebrew University and treasurer of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. NEWS Zimbabwe Jews Donate Blankets New York (JTA) — The tiny Jewish community in Zimbabwe has donated 5,000 blankets valued at $60,000 for distribution to leprosy patients this winter. The donation, assisted by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, was made to the Child Sur- vival Fund in response to an appeal by the fund's patron, Sally Mugabe, wife of Zim- babwe President Robert Mugabe. According to the JDC, there are about 1,100 Jews in the southern African nation, which has a popula- tion of 9.7 million, 98 per- cent black. Cabinet Okays Gaza Settlement Jerusalem — The cabinet has approved the estab- lishment of the Gaza Strip settlement of Dugit, one of eight new settlements pro- vided for in the national uni- ty government coalition agreement. During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrtzeits of the following departed friends, with the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and studying of mishnayos.
