bile the report that
Israel has armed
South Africa with
nuclear weapons made
headlines in the United
States, Israelis this past
week were far more inter-
ested in a story about the
emergence of an
underground army in the
territories consisting of
10,000 keffiyah-masked
young Palestinians who
identify with Yassir Arafat's
Fatah, the mainstream PLO
group.
Over the weekend, the IDF
raided houses in the Gaza
refugee camp of Jabaliya —
where 55,000 people live in a
one-square- kilometer area
— and arrested a dozen offi-
cers of this secret army,
which is preparing to launch
"the second stage of the in-
tifada."
The army members say
that they are all Fatah; but
some of the so-called peoples
soldiers are members of
Moslem fundamentalist
terror organizations who are
anti-Arafat.
Jabaliya is a hotbed of
Islamic fundamentalism It
is where the intifada began
on Dec. 7, 1987, and it re-
mains a hive of desperate
anger, fanaticism and
despair. Late last week,
troops who encountered
masked youths in Jabaliya
shot and killed Abdel Abu
Salem, when he ignored
orders to halt and warning
shots. The IDF now has
orders to shoot masked
rioters, on the assumption
that they are part of the
newly emerging "Peoples
Army of the Intifada."
The Peoples Army is not
confined to the refugee
camps. It is strongest in
Nablus, the biggest and
most prosperous town in the
West Bank.
An intrepid reporter,
Ariella Ringel- Hoffman, ac-
companied by a photogra-
pher, last week was granted
a meeting with some of the
masked men and women of
the Peoples Army, who pos-
ed for the camera in their
new camouflage uniforms,
holding axes and daggers.
They told the Israeli
reporter something about
the basic organization of the
army (in cells patterned
after classic Communist
revolutionary units), how
they tightly control city
blocks and neighborhoods, a
little about their
backgrounds (ages 20-22,
some university- educated),
and their goals: how they
plan to liberate their
homeland, meaning all of
Palestine, including Israel.
Several units of this
Peoples Army are affiliated
with local gangs in Nablus
such as the "Black Pan-
thers," and are responsible
for many of the daily brutal
murders of "collaborators,"
prostitutes and drug pushers
— rival drug pushers, that is.
For the Panthers, like their
American model, deal in
dope as well as murder.
Fatah's new army is really
an attempt to gain back con-
trol of the intifada, which is
now in the hands of the
Palestinian underclass of
criminals and of radicals
whose bloodlust has upset
even Yassir Arafat.
Last week, Black Panthers
walked into a Khan Yunis
hospital and chopped a 25-
year-old nurse to death with
axes, saying that the
woman, Sawfan Abu al-
Hussein, had helped the
Israelis.
They kill about five people
every week, exceeding the
number killed by Israeli
troops.
