hari Lewis loves
telling the story of
doing a Command Per-
formance for the Queen of
England. After Lewis finish-
ed her act, the Queen's
daughter, Princess Anne,
came racing up breathlessly
to ask Lewis how she came to
be a ventriloquist, mention-
ing that it seemed so unusual
an occupation for a girl.
"I told her my father was a
magician and that he always
had magicians and ventrilo-
quists around the house,"
Lewis explains. "Well, the .
princess took just one beat
and then said ; 'Yes, one does
tend to get involved in one's
family business, doesn't
one!' "
In Lewis' case, as well as
Princess Anne's, one does
seem to follow in the family
business, although Lewis
never gave any thought to it
initially.
A graduate of New York's
Music and Art High School
(the "Fame" school), Lewis
began studying music at a
young age and had every in-
tention of becoming a dancer.
But, she says, as easy as it
was for her to gain employ-
ment as a dancer, she just
couldn't seem to get out of the
chorus and into the spotlight.
"And I don't have a chorus
psyche," she says. "That's
quite clear. So one day I ask-
ed my dad where he had put
the puppet he had gotten for
me several years before. He
told me it was under my bed.
I found it, and I've been work-
ing ever since."
Lewis' father recognized his
daughter's abilities when she
was still quite young. One
day, when he thought he
heard Lewis' younger sister
screaming to be let out of a
closet, it was actually Shari
throWing her voice into the
closet to make it appear her
sister was trapped there.
"Dad considered ventrilo-
quism to be one of the
magical arts because what
you're doing is midirection,"
Lewis offers. "His definition
of magic was quite broad. It
included puppetry, pan-
tomime, even juggling —
anything that called upon the
audience's imagination to
react to action that did not
produce a logical reaction:'
In an attempt to develop
her talents, Lewis' father pro-
duced some books on ventrilo-
quism and a carved, turn-of-

Best friends:
Shari and Lambchop

the-century "Willie Talk" doll
that, because he was to have
a female voice, was ap-
propriately dressed in a wig
and pinafore and renamed
Buttercup.
One day, Lewis' father
embellished an old nursery
rhyme that stuck with her.
"He said, 'If Mary has a lit-
tle lamb, why shouldn't Shari
have a little. lamb too?' I
laughed and thought nothing
of it, but the next day, so-
meone offered to make me a
puppet. I asked them to make
it a lamb. But when the lamb
puppet was. given to me, it
was so small compared to my ,
big dummy that I put it in a
box under my bed and forgot
about it."
But that was the dummy
that would eventually change
Lewis' life and career goals.
When the producer of Cap-
tain Kangaroo saw Lewis
working and invited her on
the show, Lambchop, the
wise-cracking, smart allecked
puppet was born.
Lambchop's personality de-
veloped as any astute actress'
should. Lewis had been study-
ing acting at the Neighbor-
hood Playhouse in New York
with Sanford Meisner who
teaches a version of "method"
acting.
"Sandy's basic philosophy
is that 'acting is reacting; "
says Lewis, "which really
means that you pay attention
to what the other actor is do-

ing or feeling or saying. So I
simply put Lambchop on my
hand, sat in front of a mirror
and did very basic method im-
provisation with her. That's
the way Lambchop and I
work. She works very
organically, and I think that's
why our relationship is so
nice. We have become very at-
tached to one another and we
just sit there and chat. Or
fight. Or giggle. I can always
rely on her to say the right
thing at the right time."
Although Lewis and Lamb-
chop began their rise to suc-
cess appealing to the younger
generation (and still do), they
also possess an adult sense of
humor.
"We have played to adults
all over the world;' Lewis
says, "so Lambchop is used to
any sort of audience. She is an
actress, and the material she
does varies according to the
audience just as any actress'
material varies. If she's with
a kiddie audience, she does
kiddie stuff. If she's with an
adult audience, she does adult
material."
Lewis, too, has branched out
in her professional world. In
an effort to stimulate children
through books and videos, she
has produced nine videos, in-
cluding the popular 101
Things For Kids 7b Do, along
with 46 other books and 11
audio cassettes.
One of her latest works is
One-Minute Jewish Stories,
