THE JEWISH NEWS

You should avoid foods high in
cholesterol. It's a fact, a high
blood cholesterol level sub-
stantially increases your
chances of developing heart
disease. By cutting down on
fatty, rich foods, you can do
yourself a big favor. You could
lower your blood cholesterol
level and reduce your risk of
heart disease.
For more information about a
planned and balanced diet,
contact your American Heart
Association. We'll give you
some free advice on how to
plan a diet good for life.

The Pizza Baron
Was Wise Choice

DANNY RASKIN

Special to The Jewish News

he officers and di-
rectors of Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame made a wise choice in
selecting Mike Ilitch as third
recipient of the annual Alvin
N. Foon Memorial Award at
recent Fifth Annual Induc-
tion dinner.
He's the kind of guy Al
would have been proud to be
connected with . . . Mike is a
success story and the same
gent who in 1959 with wife
Marian opened their first Lit-
tle Caesars Pizza in Garden
City . . . Today, there are over
2,600 in all 50 states, Canada
and England.
- But the Alvin Food Award
has nothing to do with his
Little Caesars operation or
ownership of the Detroit Red
Wings . . . Mike received it for
his efforts in the development
of amateur athletics.
Other recipients were Don
Canham, former athletic
director at University of
Michigan; and Ernie
Harwell, Detroit Tiger Hall of
Fame broadcaster.
About 700 was count by
caterer Paul Kohn of dinners
served at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek . . . a record
crowd that saw induction of
Mike Yellen, national hand-
ball champion; the late Lou
Handler and the late Jake
Mazer.
Maybe groups will wake up
to the fact that comedian
Jack Carter is not a depen-
dable personage to have for
their affair . . . He told
MJSHF three days before the
dinner that he wouldn't show
up . . . Carter has a very
dubious reputation for doing
this sort of thing.
Dave Hermelin filled in and
was good . . . short and
humorous . . . like telling
about Mike Ilitch to come out
with a kosher pizza called
"Little Irving's Kosher Pizza
Savings & Loan?'
Willie Stone and late Lou
Handler starting Century
Boxing Club 30 years ago .. .
Two-fisted Mickey Fishman
with champagne for hard-
working gals in Shaarey
Zedek lobby . . . Judge Avern
Cohn shaking elbows with
folks . . . both hands full .. .
Sam Yellen in the big, black
J.R. cowboy hat . . . Eddie
Rosenberg and a mouthfull of
kosher hot dog before dinner
looking great in a beautiful
, tailored suit . . . He and wife
Shirley make a fine couple
. . . Lou Freeman seeking ad-

dress of old friend Ben Glen-
ner . . . Lois Lipnik buying
two tickets to see Jack Carter
. . . hubby Dr. Morrie Lipnik
on duty and no Jack Carter.
Leonard Karpelis lauded as
Mike Yellen's mentor hand-
ball coach at former
Southfield Athletic Club .. .
of course kosher pizza among
the oodles of varied hors
d'oeuvres before dinner .. .
Jerry Robins with miniature
hockey stick from a table
centerpiece, "It's so I can fight
off Marge tonight," said Jerry
waving the stick . . . Joel
Must reminding me that I left
brother Alan's name out of
Cheese Smart item . . . Dave
Hermelin after affair leading
group in singing Lou
Handler's Camp Tamakwa
song.

tance of weight regulatiox,
and the exercise in the
prevention and control of
diabetes . . . She has diabetes
and is also a kidney
transplant recipient.
Marilyn is a featured guest
of open house tomorrow, 11
a.m., with American Diabetes
Association, Michigan Af-
filiate Inc., and WW teaming
up with free diabetes screen-
ing . . . Also cooking
demonstrations, free recipes,
coupons, door prizes, etc.
It's at Weight Watchers
Center on Grand River in the
Village Commons (three
blocks east of Farmington
Rd.) . . . For more info, call
WW at 553-3232 . . . Imagine,
of the 11 million. Americans
with diabetes, almost half,
about 5 million don't even
know they have it . . . If left
untreated, diabetes can cause
all sorts of problems.
I KNEW Lorraine Blanc
was a popular gal, but not so
much as recently on in-
advertently omitting her be-
ing with hubby Marty Blanc
among those at Michigan
Cancer Foundation's Angels'
affair . . . Folks called to ask
how come I didn't mention
that she was with Marty .. .
they've been married a
million years and very seldom
apart. ❑
