or centuries, strug-
gling artists have lived
and worked in depress-
ed areas of big cities. Har-
monie Park, an unobtrusive
group of buildings across from
the Detroit Artists' Market in
downtown Detroit, has hous-
ed many studios and galleries
for many years. -
- Morris Brose and Sue Lin-
burg, two well-known
sculptors, have occupied a
3,000-square-foot loft in the
area for 26 years. Last month
they were contacted by Scher-
vish, Vogel and Merz, ar-
chitects and urban designers,
notifying them that they
would have to move. Accor-
ding to Linburg, Harmonie
Park has been historically
designated, and the -architec-
tural firm won a federally
funded grant of more than $6
million to partially finance
the renovation of eight
buildings in the area.
Although the buildings'
outer facades are to remain
untouched, major changes
will be made internally.
Neither David Schervish
nor Charles Merz could be
reached for comment.
According to Linburg, "The
`deconstruction' should begin
after the first of the year" and
their spacious studio is to be
subdivided into several units.
"This is unfortunate," says
Linburg. "Artists move into a
depressed area, bring beauty
and creativity and eventual-
ly are forced to move as the
area becomes gentrified.
When developers , and plan-
ners identify areas and
`restore' them, artists can't af-
ford to live there anymore!'

Rent price hikes and
redesigning of space will

make it impossible for artists
like Brose to remain where
they are. He does large-scale
pieces like the 14x12x8-foot
"Tzedek" which stands at the
entry way of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. "We current-
ly have a 12-foot ceilingrsays
Linburg, "something we need
and will be hard to replace!'
Brose's work, which in-
cludes the doors to the
Holocaust Memorial Center,
has been exhibited in the
Whitney Museum of Ameri-
can Art, the Chicago Institute
of Arts and the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts. Linburg is a
professor of fine arts at the
Center for Creative Studies.
Her work has been exhibited
internationally.
She laments that finding a
studio that will adequately
meet their needs is going to
be touch at best. "Still," she
says "we are trying to turn
this whole thing into
something positive!'
The artists are hplding an
exhibition and studio- sale
Nov. 17, 18 and 19 at their
studio, 1437 Randolph. For in-
formation, call the studio,
965-1335. ❑
