Yehuda-h's secular
teachers have re-
jected the school administra-
tion's latest offer, but have
no plans to- go on strike, said
Fred Goldenberg, the
teachers' negotiator.
Instead the 39 teachers
, want to hire'an outside
mediator to help negotiate a
contract, he said.
Rabbi E. B. Freedman,
Yeshiva administrative di-
rector, said he was not
aware that the teachers re-
jected the administration's
offer, saying the offer is still
on the negotiating table.
"We have given our offer.
It is our final and best offer,"
Rabbi Freedman said.
Goldenberg said this was
the second contract offered
to the secular teachers since
negotiations began about six
months ago. Hebrew
teachers have been working
without a contract for three
years.

Teachers had discussed the
possibility of a strike after
their old contract expired
Aug. 31. Fears that teachers
might strike after contract
negotiations broke down
again forced school admin-
istrators to shorten classes
for an hour one day for
sixth, seventh and eighth
grade students.
"We would have been
happy if they offered the
same contract we had for the
past two years," Goldenberg
said.
The new contract "offers
minimal benefits at the best
and minimal increases in
salary," said Goldenberg,
adding the old contract offer
provided less benefits.
The typical secular teacher
at the Yeshivath averages
$11,500 a year, he said.
Although the teachers felt
it was better than the ad-
ministration's first offer and
had possibilities, they could
not accept it, he said.
The next step is to take the
teachers' case to a mediator.
The teachers recently hired
an attorney.
