,

so kids can have another
place to play athletics. It's to
help them get to know one
another, to know Jewish
unity and identity around
the world," he said.
The Jewish Community
Center's Maple-Drake
Building in West Bloomfield
is the main site for gym-
nastics, soccer, basketball,
volleyball, chess, wrestling,
karate, cross-country,
tennis, raquetball and table
tennis.
But some matches in these
sports, as well as swimming,
track and field, softball and
golf, will be held at other
sites in West Bloomfield,
Farmington Hills,
Southfield and Bloomfield
Hills. The 15th — and most
distant — venue is the
Palace of Auburn Hills,
which will host the opening
ceremonies. Aug. 19.
Robinson said he was espe-
cially pleased that all three
predominately Jewish coun-
try clubs — Tam O'Shanter,
Frankl.in Hills and
Knollwood —have donated
their courses for the golf
competition, which will
make its debut in the 1990
Games. The schedule .calls
for the first 18 holes to be
played at Knollwood, nine
more at Franklin and the
final nine at Tam.
"This is a generous com-
mitment on the part of the
club presidents ,Steve Eps-
tein at Tam, Harvey Schatz
of Knollwood and Hugh
Greenberg of Franklin Hills
— and their memberships,"
Robinson said. "It's indica-
tive of the community effort
needed to make the Games a
success."
Site selection was based on
the quality of athletic
facilities and their
availability. "We'll be using
some of them all day for four
days," Robinson said. "We
also wanted them to be
within a reasonable distance
of each other, so as to fit in
with our shuttlebus
schedule."
The venues and their
sports, in addition to the
Maple-Drake Center, are:
• West Bloomfield High
School — track and field,
swimming, basketball and
volleyball and possibly
wrestling and karate;
• Keith Field (W. Bloom-
field Sports Complex) —
softball;
• West Hills Middle School
(Bloomfield Hills) — basket-
ball, soccer, softball;
• Orchard Lake Middle
School (West Bloomfield) —
basketball, possibly soccer;
• Abbott Middle School
(West Bloomfield) — basket-
ball, softball;

Getting ready for the Youth Games are Hugh Greenberg, Jay Robinson,
Harvey Schatz, Maccabi Youth golf chairman Henry Spiro and Steve
Epstein.

• West Maple Middle
School (Birmingham) —
basketball;
• Warner Middle School
(Farmington Hills) —
basketball, possibly soccer;
• Oakland Comfnunity
College (Farmington Hills)
—basketball, volleyball;

• Franklin Racquet Club
(Southfield) — tennis;
• Centaur Raquet Club
(West Bloomfield) — tennis;
• Tam O'Shanter (West
Bloomfield), Knollwood
(West Bloomfield) and
Franklin Hills (Franklin)
country clubs — golf.
