s Hitler really alive, 100
years old and venerated
by Indians in the moun-
tains of Chile like a living
god? Was Hitler really so
fond of the children of his
village that he would spend
sleepless days nursing them
when they were ill and "ask
for nothing but a hug and a
kiss in return?"
Did the Fuhrer really, as
the Indians say, step upon
their shores in June, 1945
from an "underwater boat"
— a submarine? Was he real-
ly accompanied by a slender,
blond-haired woman (Eva
Braun?) and an unidentified
aide?
All this does boggle the
mind (and maybe a few other
things), but it's true. Really.
Honest. Well, O.K., it's true
according to the latest
blather from Weekly World
News (WWN), one of the
more disreputable rags at
supermarket checkout
counters. In a "world ex-
clusive" — probably a
euphemism for a major fib —
WWN reports that "a
respected Swiss an-
thropologist," Dr. Leo Reiff,
recently stated at a press
conference in Santiago that
he had "dramatic evidence"
that the "Nazi madman"
has been living in Chile
since the end of the war. The
mountain Indians, according
to Reiff, "revere [Hitler] as a
living god and would
sacrifice their own lives to
save his."
Reiff told journalists of
"Nazi memorabilia he
recovered from the but that
Hitler allegedly lived in for
the past 44 years." Reiff said
he had recovered "a tattered
leather trunk that contained
books, maps, two Nazi
uniforms and Hitler's
uniforms."
The tabloid article includ-
ed a photo of the but "where
Hitler is said to have lived
for the last 44 years," but
not of the "Nazi
memorabilia." Another
photo showed three children
of Hitler's village who "are
the apple of the Fuhrer's
eye."
The WWN article also in-
cluded statements from Reiff
that the woman and aide
who accompanied Hitler
both died in the mid-1950s,
and that, as the an-
thropologist approached the
village, Hitler had been car-
ried out of it "like a baby" by
Indians to a hiding place
that the natives would not
reveal. Reiff further claimed
that the Indians had
threatened to kill him and
his colleagues "for asking
too many questions because
the 'doctor' said he would
rather die than see another
white man."
Reiff said the Indians had
told him that Hitler "still
combs his hair to one side
and wears a mustache. But
his hair is white... They say
he has a horribly aged and
wrinkled face."
All of which brings up the
question: If Hitler is really a
centenarian, does he have a
magic Nazi potion that en-
sures longevity? Was that
potion the fascists' secret
weapon near the end of the
war? If Hitler cares so much
for the Indian children, has
he forsaken his ideal of the
blond, blue-eyed Aryan?
If Hitler is really so good at
caring for children, will he
open a chain of pan-Andean
day care centers, "Der
Fuhrer's Kindly Kinder
Kare," that will finance the
rise of the Third Reich, this
time at an altitude of 12,000
feet? Is it time to renew
Lend-Lease, revive the
U.S.-Russo alliance, and
brace ourselves for dinners
of Spam and a shortage of
nylon stockings?

Mr. Dylan, do you?
Probably not, because
troubadour Bob Dylan, nee
Robert Zimmerman of Hibb-
ing, Minn., keeps coming
back to Judaism, despite a
foray or two into Christiani-
ty or the religions of the
East. According to Rolling
Stone, Dylan recently per-
formed three songs on the
"L'Chaim — To Life!" tele-
thon, which aired opposite
"Saturday Night Live's"
15th-anniversary show.
Dylan, who wore a yar-
mulke on the show, ap-
peared with his son-in-law,
musician Peter Him-
melman, and actor Harry
