ne activist used a
marker to scrawl
peace slogans on
hundreds of Israel Defense
Force tanks. A group of
women all dressed in black
hold a silent vigil in
Jerusalem to protest Israel's
presence in the West Bank
and Gaza.
The intifada, the Palesti-
nian uprising in the ter-
ritories, has sparked these
and other acts by Israelis
who hold diverse political
views but are united in their
belief that Israel's occupa-
tion of the West Bank and
Gaza must end, according to
Gordon Fellman, chairman
of the sociology department
at Brandeis University.
Fellman, former co-
chairman of the New Jewish
Agenda's National Middle
East Task Force, spoke this
week on "The Palestinian
Uprising and Israeli
Security" to the local
chapter of New Jewish
Agenda.
With the intifada has come
"an amazing burgeoning of
peace activities in Israel,"
Fellman said. Among these
he cited Peace Now, Yesh
Gevul, In The Coalition,
Israeli Women's Alliance
Against The Occupation,
Year 21 Of The Occupation
and Women In Black.
These groups "get an
enormous amount of sup-
port," but they also face fre-
quent harassment, Fellman
said. The Women In Black,
who hold regular gatherings
to protest the occupation,
frequently hear from
passersby, "Why aren't you
home preparing for
Shabbat?" Fellman said.
Fellman said more and
more Israelis are becoming
disillusioned with the oc-

cupation. With reports from
soldiers stationed in the
areas and from newspaper
accounts, Israelis "began to
see what the brutality is all
about," Fellman said. "They
began to see homes being
blown up; they began to real-
ize what it means not to
have any political rights
whatsoever."
While their number has
decreased, some Israelis con-
tinue to support holding on
to the territories for
religious reasons, Fellman
said. "They believe God not
only gave Moses the Ten
Commandments, He gave
them a map."
The majority of Israelis
want the occupation to end,
but they often express fear
about the establishment of a
Palestinian state, Fellman
said.
"Objectively, the security
concern is not much of an
issue," he said. In addition
to the fact that Israel has the
"fourth strongest army in
the world, every Palestinian
understands that if a.
Palestinian state was estab-
lished, it would be
demilitarized or lightly
militarized. In either case, it
would not be a match for the
Israeli army.
"If Israel can hold off 22
well-armed Arab states,
can't it hold off a 23rd poorly
armed one?"
Fellman said the right-
wing in Israel teaches
citizens to "fear them
(Palestinians), hate them
and be angry toward them.
It speaks to people's guts,
while the left speaks to their
head."
Peace activists must learn
to address Jews' fears rather
than discount them,
Fellman said. "Part of the
politics of peace is recogniz-
ing and getting to that emo-
tional reality." ❑

UIA Director Tries
To Budget Immigration

For Neale Katz, director
general of the United Israel
Appeal, news headlines
translate into bottom lines.
With the Jewish world re-
joicing in an aliyah of Soviet
Jews and the prospect of
Ethiopian Jews reuniting
with their families in Israel,
Katz and the UIA have the
task of deciding how
American dollars will help
bring it all about.

The United Israel Appeal
provides funds, raised by the
United Jewish Appeal/Jewish
community campaigns across
America — including
Detroit's Allied Jewish Cam-
paign — to aid the people of
Israel.
These funds assist people
through the programs of the
Jewish Agency for Israel,
UIA's operating agent.
