A Beautiful Investment
Opportunity

reminded him of what he
had seen at Auschwitz.
"I got tired of the mock
trials," Vrba said. "I had the
freedom of traveling. I felt it
was wrong to stay in a coun-
try where I ha (3. so many
privileges and others did
not."
Vrba never found peace in
Israel either. Not only could
he not speak the language,
but he had no sympathy for
the Zionists. He had heard
the silence of Zionist leaders
who kept his report a secret
from Hungarian Jews, Vrba
said.
He also questions whether
Israel was born on the ashes
of Auschwitz.
"They did not die so
Israel could be born," Vrba
said. "No one ever asked
them what they wanted."
The Holocaust "was not
just murder. It was rob-
bery," he said.
Not only did the Nazis
murder Jews, but they used
their money to finance the
war, he said. Houses and
clothing formerly owned by
Jews bought the loyalty of
Quislings (or traitors as
Vrba called them). Nothing
was wasted when a Jew died;
their gold fillings were
melted and hair used to
caulk the warheads of
torpedoes.
Vrba does not look at
himself as a champion of the
Jewish people despite what-
he did to try to save them.
"I am connected with the
history of the Jewish people.
I happened to witness that
tragedy," he said.
"I was never very
religious. I did not save them
because they were Jews, but
because it was an injustice. I
would do it all over again in
order to obstruct the Ger-
mans from committing this
crime," Vrba said, with a
passionate conviction in his
voice. "I did all I could." ❑
