strictor wrapped around its
hapless prey.
Had it not been for vast
amounts of economic aid
from the United States and
Diaspora Jewry, Israel's
economy would look much
like Poland's. One can only
hope that Israelis take the
point and resolve to do
something about it.
Finally, there is the level
of political metaphysics. We
have all heard Jewish people
who are less than upset to
hear of troubles visited on
Poles and Germans, believ-
ing that these people are
getting their just desserts
after centuries of
persecuting and vilifying
Jews.
There is a sense of inner
satisfaction one can feel
when bad things happen to
bad people, to twist a well
known phrase just a bit, but
it is in the end a petty and
narcissistic indulgence.
Neither does it represent the
best of the Jewish tradition,
for we are warned in the
Ethics of the Fathers: "Do
not rejoice over the fall of
your adversaries."
Grand and portentous
things are happening in
Europe and, while rapid
change is always fraught
with dangers, there is reason
for all people who love liber-
ty and justice to rejoice in
the new light shining upon
the societies of Eastern
Eui-ope.
From that perspective, the
proper Jewish response is to
remember what we pray
every weekday, and what we
prayed for with special fer-
vor on the High Holy Days
in the Amidah, when we
asked the Holy One, blessed
be He, to remove the rule of
tyranny from the face of the
earth. It would seem that
God, in his tender mercy, is
answering our prayers.

UN Measure
United Nations (JTA) —
Calling the resolution one-
sided and unbalanced, the
United States recently
vetoed a Security Council
measure that would have
criticized Israel's treatment
of a West Bank village
whose residents refused to
pay taxes.
That all of the remaining
14 countries on the Security
Council voted in favor of the
resolution illustrated that
Israel's recent tentative
steps toward negotiating
with the Palestinians have
so far failed to win any addi-
tional support in the United
Nations forum.
Tuesday's measure focused
on Israel's response to a tax
strike by the village of Beit
Sahur. In a tax-collection
operation that took place
from Sept. 20 to Oct. 31,
Israeli authorities con-
fiscated approximately $1.5
million in cash and property
from the 320 residents who
had not paid taxes.
