SHERM FREUND - MEL STERNFELD'S
WE TAKE EXCEPTION
TO WHAT YOUR
MOTHER TAUGHT
YOU.
YOU SHOULDN'T EAT
EVERYTHING PUT IN
FRONT OF YOU.
You should avoid foods high in
cholesterol. It's a fact, a high
blood cholesterol level sub-
stantially increases your
chances of developing heart
disease. By cutting down on
fatty, rich foods, you can do
yourself a big favor. You could
lower your blood cholesterol
level and reduce your risk of
heart disease.
For more information about a
planned and balanced diet,
contact your American Heart
Association. We'll give you
some free advice on how to
plan a diet good for life.
them and say, 'Why did you
call that play?'
"I really thought, and
maybe this is naive, that I
could make a difference if I
were close enough to im-
fluence these guys. So when
I got the job, I just carried
that over; it's my natural en-
thusiasm."
Often he directs comments
as if speaking directly to
players, many of whom, he
says, listen to the station.
Unger was on the air for
less than six months when he
directed a plea to Pistons star
Isiah Thomas, who was play-
ing while injured.
Unger, addressing Thomas
by his nickname, recalls say-
ing, "Zeke, look, we all know
you grew up in a
neighborhood, in a ghetto
where, if you weren't playing
ball, you were on the streets,
you were in trouble, maybe
you were doing drugs. It was
bad news.'
"I said, 'This is the NBA.
You're hurt. Even though
you're a great player, if you
aren't 100 percent, you can
hurt the team by trying to be
out there. Take a couple
games off. Heal yourself.
These guys will carry the load
for a couple games. You're
still going into the playoffs.
Just heal yourself.' ".
Thomas did take time off,
but Unger did not know why
until a week later. After a
Pistons game, forward John
SAlley pointed Unger out to
Thomas.
"All of the sudden," says
Unger, "Isiah says, 'You're
Mark Unger?' I said, 'Yeah.'
He stuck out his hand and
shook mine and said, 'I want
to thank you very much.' I
just about died. I thought,
`Gee, I really did achieve my
goal.' My purpose was fulfill-
ed. I couldn't ask for more."
Despite his busy schedule —
which includes taking voice
lessons from Kathy McClain,
Unger still found time recent-
ly to buy his first house and
become engaged to Flo Stern.
The two have a dog named
Sparky. Why "Sparky?" "I
wanted to name him Zeke,
but Flo wouldn't let me."
Unger is a member of Tbrn-
ple Emanu-El, a founder of
which was his late uncle,
Myron Unger.
"I'm very strong with my
religion. Religion's a very im-
portant part of my life."
For two months this sum-
mer, Unger was co-host with
Ron Cameron on "Sports
View Today," seen on Channel
62 and several local cable
outlets.
It was Unger's first televi-
sion job. Although the two
parted company, "it was a
good learning experience and
I've got a (video) tape now. I'd
like to take that to other TV
stations."
Is Unger destined to
become a television sport-
scaster? Stay tuned. ❑
