formed at the Khan have
been "Deep Water" by Hillel
Mitelpunkt; "Thhila" by Shai
Agnon; "A Night in May" by
A.B. Yehoshua and "Yanti
Parazi" by Eldad Ziv.
Gazit is quick to emhasize
that original works were in-
itially treated unfavorably.
They were considered
strange, not to be taken
seriously. Today, he says, they
are very successful, all done
in a style of naturalistic
drama.
Amit Gazit was resident
director for two years at the
Beer Sheva theater, worked in
both the Habima and Haifa
Theaters and spent several
years in theater in London
before becoming artistic direc-
tor of the Khan almost two
years ago. In depicting the
aims and direction of the
Khan and his role in the
dynamics of theater, Gazit
emerges as a man driven by
a sense of purpose, ardently
ambitious to the challenge of
maximum creativity.
"You ask what determined
a good play. I don't hold any
miracle formula," he says. "Of
course it has to be well writ-
ten, dramatic. It has to have
something to say, a strong
message, sometimes hidden
behind symbols — even a joke.
Basically, a good play is writ-
ten out of a need. The
playwright suffers and reacts
to his pain."
With stark disdain, he adds,
"What freedom can a
playwright possibly have
when there is censorship?
Censorship is an attack on
my freedom."
On the one hand, he says,
he will not disregard the law,
as he is maintained by public
funds; but on the other hand,
he will not hesitate to choose
plays which have an element
of the rebel, the individual
struggling for liberty. "Who
are we? What is happening to
us? These questions need to
be asked," he says.
For Gazit, drama acts as his
vehicle in confronting these
powerful, profound questions.
`We don't have the answers.
We're just asking the right
questions."
Pained by what he sees as
the fraying of the moral fabric
of society, Gazit expounds on
the violence, the disrespect.

"I see the plays we select as
a source of light, a tower of
light on all that we hold
sacred," he says. "And the
goal, of course, is candid,
unremitting communications
with our audience. They are
presented with a moral
choice, and if in the process
they are also entertained,
then for me, it is nothing less
than a catharsis." ❑
