I die, I will also get to see
my grandchildren who were
born in Addis Ababa after
we were brought to Israel
from the Sudanese refugee
camps." she said.
Up until now it has been
very rough for her children
who came to Addis from
Woggera, including her
married daughter, Woude
Tashome, who has four chil-
dren, and a son, Ayalew
Telele. A recent letter from
Aveve's son, which took two
months to arrive, said :
"Send me money — we have
nothing to eat and are in the
midst of a lot of problems.
Our health is fine, but we
know only to be farmers, so
there is no work for us in
Addis. Without a profession
we are lost. Don't send mon-
ey through the mail — it is
not allowed, and it gets
stolen."
Frequently, the matriarch
has wondered how she could
have come to Israel without
all of her children. The pain
of separation has taken a
heavy toll. "But now," she
says, " everything is going
to be all right." ❑

"I like to shop on The Boardwalk because I feel
very comfortable in all of the shops. I especially
like the attention my children and I get from the
salespeople. ... and they're so creative."

"It's better on The Boardwalk."

Philadelphia (JTA) — The
Justice Department opened
a record 41 investigations
into racial violence, involv-
ing 62 defendants, during
the fiscal year just ended,
U.S. Attorney General
Richard Thornburgh an-
nounced.
Among them were five
skinheads indicted in Dallas
who "conspired to violate
the rights of Jews, blacks
and Hispanics."
The attorney general also
spoke of a breakthrough in
Nazi war crimes investiga-
tions, citing a memorandum
of understanding signed
>-- with the procurator general
in Moscow on cooperation
>G between the two countries in
that area.
The United States also is
seeking Soviet cooperation
to combat international ter-
rorism, said Thornburgh,
who recently returned from
a visit to Moscow.
With respect to emigration
from the USSR, Thornburgh
said that while in Moscow,
he got a chance to study
Soviet draft legislation on
emigration reforms.
But he rejected a relaxa-
tion of Jackson-Vanik
Amendment trade sanctions
against the Soviet Union in
the immediate future.
