Jews Quit UK Cabinet;
Anti-Semitism Blamed

London (JTA) — Questions
have been raised publicly
whether anti-Semitism was
involved in some degree in
the departure of several
Jewish members of Prime
Minister Margaret That-
cher's Cabinet in recent
years.
The issue was explored on
British television's
"Channel 4 Dispatches"
program, and the answers
tended to be affirmative.
Anti-Semitism in the Con-
servative Party doubtlessly
fueled the row that led to the
downfall of Edwina Currie
as health minister last
December, according to
Anna McCurley, a govern-
ment affairs consultant and
former member of Parlia-
ment.
"I've heard the convenient
label 'pushy Jewess' used of

Edwina Currie," McCurley
said.
That was the case despite
the fact that Currie, born
Edwina Cohen in Liverpool,
renounced her religion and
describes herself as Church
of England since her mar-
riage to Ray Currie.
But male chauvinism was
also a factor, according to
Melinda Libby, a political
researcher who was adviser
to Social Services Secretary
John Moore.
McCurley said anti-
Semitism was not confined
to the older generation.
Other rumored victims of
anti-Semitism were Leon
Brittan, who resigned as
Thatcher's secretary of trade
and industry in 1986, and
Nigel Lawson, who stepped
down recently as chancellor
of the exchequer.

New York (JTA) —
Knesset Member Shulamit
Aloni blasted the policies of
both Israel's coalition
government and those in the
United States who lend sup-
port to those policies, in a
speech Nov. 1 at the Con-
ference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish
Organizations.
Aloni, leader of the left-
wing Citizen's Rights
Movement, has been an
outspoken critic of Israel's
treatment of the Palesti-
nians in the territories, and
a vocal advocate of negotia-
tion with the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization.
"Let's start talking," the
MK said in her speech.
"Whenever in our part of the
world there was a standstill,
there was war."
She said that Jewish
values of humanitarianism
should be considered as seri-
ously as security in the
treatment of the Palesti-
nians in the territories.
The Palestinians in the
territories, she said, are op-
pressed and fighting for
their rights. Aloni said she
was convinced that they
were not bent on the
destruction of Israel.
"Hundreds of thousands of
[West Bank Arabs] come into
Israel every day," she said.
"If they wanted to, they
could set all of the hotels on
fire and kill us all."

She had especially critical
words for the American
Israel Public Affairs Com-
mittee, which she accused of
distributing "shameful pro-
paganda against the PLO."
