as a career," but because it
earned credit.
During his senior year,
Unger left Ann Arbor for Los
Angeles, doing copywriting at
W.B. Doner. Interestingly
Unger's clients included
several who advertised on
radio during hockey and
baseball games.
"So," says Unger, "I was
writing copy like, 'When was
the last time you had your
tires checked? Had Reggie
Jackson just hit three home
runs in the World Series?'
Even then, I was tied into
radio."
While in Los Angeles,
Unger took classes at Peper-
dine University. He returned
to U-M for his bachelor's
degree.
Next came Florida, where
Unger worked in a bar own-
ed by his mother Bette and
her husband, Henry Rosen-
thal. The bar was host to
sportscaster Ron Harrison's
weekly radio call-in show.
Unger did some on-air com-
mercials for the bar, then got
involved in the show's football
predictions.
After a tour of Harrison's
station, the idea finally hit
the Detroiter. "I said, 'My
God, I've been a guy who
reads both sports pages every
day. I know more than this
guy does. If he can earn a liv-
ing at it, I ought to give it a
shot? So I got a start at $25
a week at a little station in
the Keys, WFKZ."
for
homesick
Soon
Michigan, Unger returned,
shopped his demo tape
around, and in March 1986,
landed at WJZZ.
Unger established his
broadcasting style im-
mediately. On his first day at
WJZZ, "I wrote a story on the
Lions." I absolutely ripped
Lions General Manager Russ
Thomas, something I always
wanted to do as I sat watching
the Lions lose every Sunday.
And now I had my chance to
do it on the air. I'll never
forget my first commentary,
just ripping Russ Thomas.
And I'm proud to say I haven't
changed."
Indeed, nobody who's
anybody on the local sports
scene remains untouched by
Unger's aggressive commen-
tary, whether it be positive or
negative.
He sometimes reflects fans'
frustrations, as "when you're
watching a game and you see
Monte Clark or Bo
Schembechler or somebody
call another off-tackle play
and you just want to go shake
