in the suffering of the Jewish
people but, in the history of
mankind. In retrospect, the
majority of the Jewish people
who perished in Shoah were
observant Jews .. .
We don't know why God did
not intervene in Shoah. We
are justified in asking that
question. He did intervene
before but, the German Nazis
had chosen evil. They in-
vented the heinous suffering
and deaths for our children,
fathers and mothers, brothers
and sisters. They are the
murderers and the rest of
mankind is partially guilty
by doing nothing.
By not reacting to the
calamities that befell our peo-
ple, the innocent blood and
ashes are crying and asking
for justice, and justice will
still come.
Those few individuals who
says that God justifiably
punished the Jewish people
are misguided. They are not
representing the Lubavich
Rebe and not any Chasidic
movements.

Jewish community on many
issues of consensus and poten-
tial conflict.
He has been a constant
force for constructive engage-
ment between Catholics and
Jews in greater Detroit.
This was a well-deserved
honor.

More Synagogues
In Palm Springs

In your issue of Nov. 3, you
have an article written by
Ruth Rovner about Palm
Springs, Calif. She has not in-
formed people that there is
more than one synagogue in
Palm Springs.
For your information there
are two other synagogues in
Palm Springs: Chabad of
Palm Springs Synagogue, 425
Avenida Ortega; and The
Desert Synagogue, 1068 N.

Award To Brunett

I wish to commend Temple

time low, yet all of us,
establishment and non-
establishment, are working
harmoniously towards the
day when American
diplomatic relationships re-
turn to what they were before
the revolution.
We hope especially for the
day when Israel reestablishes
its diplomatic relationship
with Ethiopia as it has with
several other African coun-
tries this year. That day may
not be in the distant future.
Just because it does not ap-
pear in the newspapers does
not mean that things are not
happening, that contacts are
not being made, that move-
ment isn't occurring: "What
you see is not necessarily
what you got."
Alpert should have more
faith in the commitment of
Israel to "bring all the Beta
Yisrael home." He should
have more faith in Menachem
Begin's 1977 pledge when
Begin took the first concrete
steps to initiate aliya from
Ethiopia.
Alpert should have more

than scorn for the Jewish
community. It was the Jewish
community that enlisted the
advocacy of the United States
government from the congres-
sional level to the State
Department, from former
President Carter just recent-
ly, and certainly the previous
Reagan/Bush administration.

I appreciate the pain that
Carl Alpert describes of
Ethiopian Jewish children
longing for their parents.
However, we must also be
mindful that today over 60
percent of the Beta Yisrael
live in Israel. Any tourist can
see them everywhere. Did
they stop coming after the
airlifts of 1984-85?
They did not.
They got there through the
combined efforts of many,
heroic and unstinting; they
unheralded, in the Jewish
world, both in the establish-
ment and out of the establish-
ment, and especially through
the consistent effort of the
Jewish world of sovereign
Israel. ❑
