COSTUME CONTROVERSY Fashion historian Sandy Schreier of Southfield will discuss the current crisis in the fashion world in her Sunday lecture, "The Costume Controversy: Is Fashion Art?" at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Schreier was recently featured in Architectural Digest and J.P. McCarthy's radio show. HEAD OVER HEELS Thmple Israel Sisterhood's donor luncheon and fashion show by Saks Fifth Avenue was a huge success with 420 guests. The centerpiece decorations were made by the members with guidance from Karen Erlich, Marlene Swarin, and Hermaine Raimi. PERSONAL PORTRAITS In her business, Portraits in Poetry, freelance writer Susan Weingarden creates poems to honor other people's occasions. As part of the entertainment for her husband Terry's 50th birthday party, Weingarden decided to let her guests be creative. Jerry Taylor gave a roaring rendition of Mumford memories. The Weingardens' children, Julie and Kevin did a David Letterman routine. Among the guests celebrating were Nancy and Barry Lefkowitz, Carole and Mel Kaftan, Helene and Ronnie Rothenberg, Laura and Jerry Taylor, Shirley Obron, Lois and Alvin Rubin, Sandy and Dan Morrison and Joan and Bob Mandell. FANTASIA SHOW Fantasia is the name of the exciting fundraiser for the American Lung Association on Nov. 15 at the Hyatt Regency. A fashion show, produced by Leah Marks, dinner and auction will highlight the evening. Sponsors include Mr. and Mrs. Jay Kogan and Cadillac. New York fashion designer George Simonton will be present to introduce his fall, holiday and cruise collections, available at Bettina. FILM AWARDS Sue Marx and Pamela Conn have another award to place next to their Oscar from Hollywood. This dynamic duo just won the CINE "Golden Eagle" award for the film Art in the Stations: Detroit People a 30-minute Mover, documentary narrated by Sam Sachs, which was aired on Channel 4 and Channel 56 and is in na- tional distribution. ❑ I LOCAL NEWS I Make-Do Recital Lebanese pianist Walid Howrani is used to playing a baby grand piano in large concert halls. This time his instrument wasn't as grand and his au- dience not as large. But Howrani managed to make an upright piano at the Michigan Inn sound like a baby grand as he entertain- ed about 200 people at The American Arabic and Jewish Friends of Metropolitan Detroit's Four- th Annual Dinner Oct. 29. After listening to two Chopin waltzes, a medley of Arabic and Hebrew tunes and a few other selections, the audience gave Howrani a standing ovation. Howrani will return to the stage at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 12 when he plays at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall.
