Schreier of Southfield

crisis in the fashion
world in her Sunday
lecture, "The Costume
Controversy: Is Fashion
Art?" at the Detroit
Institute of Arts.

featured in Architectural
Digest and J.P.

PERSONAL PORTRAITS
In her business, Portraits
in Poetry, freelance
writer Susan
Weingarden creates
poems to honor other
people's occasions. As
part of the
entertainment for her
husband Terry's 50th
birthday party,
Weingarden decided to
let her guests be
creative. Jerry Taylor
gave a roaring rendition
of Mumford memories.
The Weingardens'
children, Julie and
Kevin did a David
Letterman routine.
Among the guests
celebrating were Nancy
and Barry Lefkowitz,
Carole and Mel
Kaftan, Helene and
Ronnie Rothenberg,
Laura and Jerry
Taylor, Shirley Obron,
Lois and Alvin Rubin,

Morrison and Joan
and Bob Mandell.

Make-Do
Recital
Lebanese pianist Walid
Howrani is used to playing a
baby grand piano in large
concert halls.
This time his instrument
wasn't as grand and his au-
dience not as large. But
Howrani managed to make
an upright piano at the
Michigan Inn sound like a
baby grand as he entertain-
ed about 200 people at The
American Arabic and
Jewish Friends of
Metropolitan Detroit's Four-
th Annual Dinner Oct. 29.
After listening to two
Chopin waltzes, a medley of
Arabic and Hebrew tunes
and a few other selections,
the audience gave Howrani
a standing ovation.
Howrani will return to the
stage at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 12
when he plays at the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra Hall.
