ELECT JIM SCHUSTER SOUTHFIELD COUNCIL TUESDAY, NOV. 7 Catholic, was very helpful when the congregation laun- ched a fund-raising drive several years ago for its new wing. The crooner even has two seats reserved in his name in the sanctuary. They aren't far from Walter Annenberg's two seats; he's another Palm •Springs resident who's been an active benefactor. But the members include far more than celebrities. The congregation that was once made up mainly of retired people now has a growing amber of young families with children. Other members in- clude longtime Palm Springs residents, exiles from Los Angeles — just two hours away by car — and the snowbirds who fly south in the winter. "When the snowbirds come," says Lewis, "suddenly our services are filled with strangers. And our members welcome them with open arms!' The mountains are visible even from the front window of the sanctuary. "We thought at first of having stained glass windows designed," says Lewis. "But then we decided that nothing was more beautiful than God's handi- work!' The man-made details in this spacious sanctuary in- clude lavendar upholstered pews and a special pneumatic lift for the Torahs, which are lowered into a marble base when the sanctuary is used for non-religious programs. But long before the modern sanctuary was completed, Temple Isaiah was a Palm. Springs mainstay. The city was chartered 50 years ago, and ten years later, the con- gregation was organized. It now has 1,000 families from Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley. Facilities include two libraries, three kosher kit- chens with state-of-the-art equipment, a lavish grand ballroom, a youth lounge and a separate educational wing. With a popular lecture series in winter, adult educa- Ilion courses, and a full range I of youth activities, plus a chapel to serve Orthodox, 'Reform and Conservative members, Ibmple Isaiah is ready to serve all Jews who !are residents or visitors. ,Snowbirds, longtime residents, celebrities — all of them find their way to the synagogue in the desert. "The founding members were wise to realize that here in the desert, in a resort town, there had to be a place where all Jews could come and feel at home," says Lewis. 0 American Medical Association approves electrolysis as the only permanent method of hair removal Bloomfield Hills Hair Removal Clinic Registered Electrologists • 16 years experience 5640 W Maple • Suite 206 West Bloomfield 626-1990 Open 7 days a week DESIGN-IT, INC.
