pointing and "unhelpful" to
the peace process.
Shamir prompted that
response when he said, from
Jerusalem, that he is not
prepared to compromise
with the Palestinians, even.

falls and Israel enters into
serious conflict with
Washington. Shamir had
said his plan was to wait for
the Palestinians to tire of
their intifada, abandon their
ties with the PLO and come
to Israel to ask for peace
talks. "I hope that will not
take long," he said in a
published interview.
The more recent remarks
from Shamir were viewed as
an effort to soften the blow
and show Washington that
Jerusalem is not acting in an
obstructionist manner.
Shamir and Foreign Min-
ister Moshe Arens have ask-
ed Washington for an ad-
vance commitment to sup-
port Israel if it decides to
walk out of any dialogue
that materializes with the
Palestinians. At this point,
the U.S. has not been inclin-
ed to agree to such a re-
