accepting the realism that
earthquakes are repetitive
and to be lived with when
they recur. California is ex-
emplary in the admonitions
that the quakes are endless.
In the historic experience
there is this added
admonition:
In the 19th century, ear-
thquakes caused ravages
at Safed, Tiberias, and
Nablus, but in the long run
did not impede a certain
amount of growth in these
centers, paralleling that of
other towns in the hills and
on their outskirts (Hebron,
Ramallah, Tulkarm).
We learn from history to ac-
cept the inevitable. Earth-
quake lessons are not sweet.
Knowledge about the tremors
help us adjust to realities. ❑

etroit's Sephardic
community has a long
record of devotional
commitments. They are con-
tinuous with strong links to
the national movement and
to a world of interests in
language and culture.
The religious devotions are
traditional. The prayers have
to be in rented halls but the
congregants are dedicated
and their identification
uninterrupted.
Functioning as the Sephar-
dic Community of Greater
Detroit, and actively af-
filiated with the American
Sephardi Federation, the
community here is led by
families like the Chicorels,
Behars and others.
Sephardic interests are
gaining momentum with new
concerns shown to the
Spanish Jewish language,
Ladino, its history, music and
varying cultural aspects.
Much attention is given to
the treasures of Yiddish
literature and the growing
concern about Yiddishism.
Other linguistic matters have
been granted concern.
Aramaic was thoroughly
discussed in these columns.
Renewed attention to
Ladino merits advocacy of
general interest in lending
credence to the Spanish
Jewish language that is much
more than a dialect.
From the Jewish En-
cyclopedia Junior we borrow
this definition:

LADINO
(Judeo-
Spanish). When the Jews
left Spain in 1492, the
Spanish languge was on
the verge of change. The
old form of the language is
preserved today only in the

Jewish dialect called
Ladino. It is also called
Spaniol, Castiliano, or
Judismo. It is spoken by
Sephardic Jews in Turkey,
the Balkans, parts of North
Africa, in Israel, and the
Americas. Over 20,000 per-
sons in New York City
speak Ladino.

From the beginning,
Ladino included Hebrew
words. Later, it picked up
Arabic, Turkish, Greek,
French, and Italian words.
It is usually printed in
Rashi script; but in Turkey
and Israel a few
newspapers print Ladino
in Latin letters. Spanish
scholars often visit the
Sephardim to collect old
Spanish songs and say-
ings. Though many books
and newspapers have been
printed in Ladino, it has
not been so creative a
language as Yiddish.
There is as much duty for
an interest in and the preser-
vation of Ladino as there is in
the commitment to Yiddish
or the concern shown in the
interest in Aramaic
dictionaries.
While the Ladino-speaking
is small, it's related cultural
treasures are immense. There
is history in its legends. The
Ladino musical compositions
are truly fascinating. Neither
language nor any of the relied
treasures should be permitted
to vanish into forget-
fulness.
