dent George Bush said that
transfers of forbidden U.S.
technology "would not
enhance relations" if Israel
defied the United States to
help South Africa develop an
intermediate range missile.
Israeli officials and their
American Jewish supporters
have been deeply concerned
about the damage to Israel's
image being done from the
reports of cooperation with
South Africa.
NBC News reported last
week that Israel has "secret-
ly given South Africa
access" to the nuclear club.
Quoting unnamed intel-
ligence sources, the network
said Israel is now in "a full-
blown partnership" with
Pretoria "to produce a
nuclear-tipped missile for
South Africa."
The Israel Embassy in
Washington released a
statement insisting that
there was no truth what-
soever to the NBC report.
The White House, the
State Department and the
Pentagon did not deny the

In its report, NBC said
Israel has a secret missile
test pad near the Palmachim
beach south of Tel Aviv.
"But Israel needs an isolated
long-range test site and
Israel needs a continuous
supply of enriched uranium
for its nuclear warheads,"
Pentagon Correspondent
Fred Francis said.
"It gets both from South
Africa in exchange for mis-
sile technology," he added.
The NBC report named
Gen. Chagay Regev, a
former senior aide to
Defense Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, as the person
overseeing the project from
Israel's embassy in
