Formerly of Oak Park, Mrs. Leiderman was diagnosed two years ago as having ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She record- ed her feelings during her il- lness, hoping that such thoughts could help other suf- ferers and their families. The progressive neuro- muscular disorder caused paralysis of voluntary muscles including speech. Mrs. Leiderman, however, refused to give up during her illness, writing daily to her family members and sending messages through a facsimile machine. "I feel a very strong religious belief. I feel God gave us good. So all the bad I've had I compare to all the good and I've been a very gifted lady," she said in the Jewish News article. Mrs. Leiderman is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Susan Gould of Chicago, Dennis and Sandy Gould of Southfield and Jonathan and Ester Leider- man of Bronx, N.Y.; daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Dennis Eisenberg, Alissa and Moish Taubenblatt of Brooklyn; her mother, Anna Pritz of Oak Park; sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane and Philip Kaplan of West Bloom- field, Ilene and Jerry Dunn of Oak Park and Marlene Nessel of Southfield; and 11 grandchildren. Sherman Walt Sherman Walt, 66, a former principal bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, died Oct. 26. Mr. Walt, of Brookline, Mass., joined the Chicago Symphony orchestra in 1946 and became the prin- cipal bassoonist. He joined the Boston Symphony in 1953 until his retirement last spring. Mr. Walt is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two daughters; a son; eight grandchildren; a brother, Rolland; and sister, Helen Lattin of Farmington Hills. Jerome G. Friedman Jerome G. Friedman, past president of Hebrew Memorial Chapel, died Oct. 27. Owner of Lion Tool and Gage in Royal Oak for 25 years, Mr. Friedman was a member of Temple Israel, past president of the Oakland Century Lodge of B'nai B'rith, a member of the Masons and a member of Oddfellows, where he held the highest chair. Mr. Friedman, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Detroit 68 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Anne; a son and daughter-in- law, Joel and Melina Fried- man of Pasadena, Calif.; sisters, Charlotte Baldwin of Oak Park, Belle Wasserman of Oak Park, Virginia Ellenberger of Texas and Har- riet Sigel of Southfield. Mildred Blau Mildred Blau, active in many Jewish organizations, died Oct. 25. Mrs. Blau, 84, of Southfield, was a member of Temple Beth El and its siterhood, the Na- tional Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah and Women's American ORT. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Merton Segal of Bloomfield Hills and Peggy and Marvin Novick of Oak Park; a brother, Robert Kaye of Farmington Hills; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rachel Ruth Mendelson Rachel Ruth Mendelson, 78, of Southfield, a member of the Sinai Hospital Women's Build, died Oct. 27. Mrs. Mendelson, born in Montreal, was a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the National Council of Jewish Women and Women's American ORT. She leaves her husband, Morrie; a daughter and son- in-law, Nancy and Richard Hartman of Farmington Hills; and three grandchildren. Claire J. Cantor Claire J. Cantor, co-owner of Cantor-Lemberg Art Gallery in Birmingham since 1971, died Oct. 25. She was 59. She attended Roosevelt Col- lege in Chicago and received an associate degree in teaching. She taught in the Ferndale Schools. Mrs. Cantor was active in the Detroit Art Dealers Association, Friends of Modern Art, Founders Socie- ty of the Detroit Institute of Art and Archives of American Art. She leaves her husband, Clive, of West Bloomfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lisa of West Bloomfield; a daughter, Lisa of Chicago; her father, Isadore Mulmat of Chicago; a brother and sister-in-law, Maxwell "Buddy' and Margaret Mulmat, of Winnetka, Ill.; a sister, Bernice Goldstone of Chicago; and three grand- chidlren.
