Braille-and-speak personal computer
in which commands are entered in
Braille and can either print or speech
synthesize the information; and the
Note-a-Braille on which a person takes
notes in Braille, at a meeting for
example, and the device saves them
in memory to connect with a corn-
puter. Speech synthesizers and "talk-
ing printers" range in price from
$300 to $500.
There are many aids and pro-
grams that enable physically handi-
capped people to use a computer.
For instance, for computer operations
that require holding down two or
more keys at the same time, they can
use a mouthstick or a head-mounted
Stick.

also is available. Special software
packages enable the viewer to run
standard software programs like a
word processing package with extra
large print. The Friedman Music
Magna Viewer is an electronic aid
that enables sight-impaired people to
read music without using their hands;
the unit enlarges and projects music
onto a screen which can be set on
a piano or wherever a music stand
would be placed.
IBM has its own National Support
Center for Persons with Disabilities.
The Center does not diagnose or
prescribe an assistive device or soft-
ware package, but does provide
information on what is available and
where to get more details.
For example, persons who have
reduced motor control or who use a
headstick or mouthstick to operate a
computer asked for a way to prevent
accidental keystrokes. As a result,
IBM came up with Keyguard, a key-
board overlay that enables the user
to select a key without activating
other keys.
In some instances, substitutes or
replacements for the standard key-
board may be required. An individual
who can press on a flat surface but
cannot depress keys may be able to
