• Go to auctions and sales and
watch the bidding. When you're
ready to buy, try to buy at auction.
• Find a dealer who specializes in
investment quality work. Stick to
established print dealers, preferably
those who have been in business for
at least five years. Consult them on
the quality and authenticity of the
prints that you are interested in.
• Don't forget to get a certificate
of authenticity from the publisher.

Let's take a tour to see what's cur-
rently popular at art galleries:

of interest in original antique prints.
Botanical etchings of the 18th and
19th centuries have been greatly
popularized in recent years due to an
increased recognition of the attributes
of the artists' works and through a
proliferation of coffee table books, in-

works. Natural history prints have
great popular appeal because they
have a homey feel and decorative
impact.
Look at the work of Pierre-Joseph
Redoute, a botanical artist. Six to
eight years ago, there was an enor-
mous number of his lily series
engravings available for between
$200 to $1,200. Today, these engrav-
ings sell between $600 and $6,500.
From original 18th-century works
that sell for $100 apiece to plate
number one — the image of the male
turkey cock — in Audubon's Birds of
America series which has sold for
$65,000, there is a range of natural
history prints available to the collector.
There is also a rapidly growing in-
terest in city plans and views. Engrav-
ings and lithographs that map the
record of the development of cities,
in either bird's-eye views or eleva-
tions, are often amazingly decorative.
