PICTURE PERFECT

describe any work that has been
printed on paper, including posters.
What's confusing is that prints can be
either originals or reproductions.
An original print, as defined by the
Print Council of America, comes from
a plate, block, stone or other medium
on which an image has been created
by the artist himself. A reproduction
is a copy of a print or other art work
made by photographic techniques,
where the artist has nothing to do
with the copy other than supplying
the initial product.
Clearly, an origina! print is not a
copy or a reproduction. It is a multi-
ple, an original work that exists in
duplicates. An original print includes
each successive impression created
through contact with the stone, block,
plate or screen that was worked on
by the artist. This process may be
performed or supervised by the art-
ist, and it must meet his criteria for
excellence.

Lithographs, etchings, seri-
graphs: There are several methods
for creating fine arts multiples. A
lithograph is made with grease on
the surface of a block of limestone or
a zinc or aluminum plate. The plate
or stone is then chemically treated.
An inked roller is used to cover the
surface, and ink is accepted by the
greased image and repelled by the
areas which have not been drawn on.
A print is obtained by placing a sheet
of paper on the stone and putting it
under pressure to print what is drawn
on the surface. Lithographs are
monochromatic, often printed in
black or brown.
Probably the best known form of
print is the etching. To create an
etching, the artist scratches an image
on a metal plate which is then inked.
A print is produced as the plate and
a sheet of damp paper are run
through a clothes wringer-type press.
Similar to a silk screen, a
serigraph is also done by hand.
Various stencils, which when printed
one over the other will make a com-
pleted print, are fixed upon separate
screens of silk stretched tautly over
wooden frames. Ink is then squee-
geed on the open areas of the sten-
cil. An artist may use as many as 85
colors to create a serigraph.
