Ten years ago, President
Carter asked Loftus to coor-
dinate a top-secret investiga-
tion into Nazi recruitment by
United States intelligence
agencies as part of the Office
of Special Investigations.
Upon leaving his govern-
ment position in 1981, Loftus
wrote a history of the Nazi
smuggling programs in
America. His book,- The
Belarus Secret, led to an Em-
my Award-winning segment
on "60 Minutes" and a made-
for-TV movie, "The 'Belarus
File." He also has written ex-
poses on Klaus Barbie and
Kurt Waldheim and helped
initiate Canadian and
Australian government in-
quiries into Nazi activities.
