Nichol's parents worried at first.

1988, she was holding three
jobs at once and was getting
divorced, so she didn't prac-
tice lifting until she was
hired fulltime by Southfield
that summer.
She placed fourth in the
1989 nationals, then took
this year's Michigan state
48-kilo title by default — she
was the division's only en-
trant. But she notes that, at
last year's Cleveland Jewish
Community Center Open,
she not only took her divi-
sion but also won best
female lifter, based on the
percentage of weight lifted
to bodyweight.
Weightlifting "is a little
more athletic (than powerlif-
ting) because it combines not
only strength, but also agili-
ty and speed," Nichol said.
"It's probably the most
difficult thing I've ever done
in my life."
She explained that
powerlifting consists of three
lifts — the squat, bench press
and deadlift, with two of the
three beginning with
weights on a rack — while
weightlifting's two, the
snatch and clean-and-jerk,
both feature the weights be-
ing lifted from the ground.
Delving into exercise
physiology — in which she
holds a master's degree —
Nichol explained that,
unlike sports such as
baseball, in which a pitcher
exerts pressure on an object
(the ball) and a catcher
receives the object, a

weightlifter is both pitcher
and catcher, doing both in
the span of only seconds. She
constantly works on her
flexibility and technique,
she said. "It's hard to get it
all down to look the same
every time," noting each
move must be done
"smoothly and properly.
There's so much to think
about: positioning of my feet,
how high to put the bar, how
much air to take in, where to
focus my eyes, the grip —
how wide, how narrow; com-
ing up on your toes, jumping
— on and on and on. In the
starting position, do I have
my butt low enough, my
back straight enough? Oy! I
get tired thinking about it."
Her parents were opposed
to her sport at first. "They
thought I would grow big
and ugly," Nichol said.
Although she considers
herself "stocky," she would
never go for bodybuilding. "I
don't like that look,
therefore, why should I do
that to my body?"
Although she and the
other women don't like the
wrestler-type tanksuits they
must wear during competi-
tion, most make sure "our
nails are done, our hair is
done, our makeup is on"
when they take the floor.
"We have to do something
when we go out there in this
singlet," she said. "I don't
question my feminity at all."
Her sport's no piece of
cake, either. Besides train-
