PIIIIMHASIERS NEW & USED CAR BROKER (313) 851-CARS (313) 851-2277 54 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1989 Former Bay City Cantor Finds Itt-one-ment' At Seattle Temple DAVID VOLK Special to The Jewish News I t may not have happened quite the way she wanted, but a Michigan native had a chance to realize a long- time goal when she led her own High Holiday services this year. "This has always been a dream of mine," said former Bay City resident Cantor Marilyn Ladin, speaking of the services she conducted Rosh Hashanah at the Jewish Community Center in subur- ban Seattle. "I'm excited; I'm nervous; I'm scared. I pray that I am going to be able to provide people with the religious ex- perience that they should have" during the holidays, Ladin said a week before the beginning of Rosh Hashanah. The situation was an unex- pected change from the posi- tion Cantor Ladin found herself in last June, when her three-year contract with a Reform synagogue in Seattle, 11•2 ■ 11111•11 ■ 1 Temple De Hirsch Sinai, expired. "It became evident when I left De Hirsch Sinai that there wasn't something for me to fit into at that late date," she said. That is, until she discovered that another congregation had decided not to hold its traditional overflow services at the Jewish Center on Mercer Island, a suburban city just east of Seattle. Knowing that a large percen- tage of Jews in that area are not affiliated with a con- gregation, Cantor Ladin rushed in to fill the gap. The services also offered the advantage of allowing her temporary congregants a greater chance of par- ticipating, Cantor Ladin said. When people called to make reservations, many were ask- ed if they wanted to take part in the service. Another difference between her service and other local observances was that Cantor Ladin did not give sermons during the course of the holidays. Instead, she gave talks based on the theme of what she called "At-one- ment." "At-one-ment is what I find a lot of people say they are looking for. They want more spirituality in their lives," Cantor Ladin said. Cantor Ladin's father, T. George Sternberg, was a lawyer in Bay City who serv- ed as cantor for a local Con- servative congregation. He also trained his daughter. Despite having the proper educational background, Cantor Ladin said she never expected to be a professional cantor because there weren't many women cantors when she was raised. She sang pro- fessional opera work beginn- ing in 1970, about the time she began her studies at Cen- tral Michigan University. In 1973, she moved to Milwaukee, where she served as a cantor before coming to Seattle in 1986. ❑ SYNAGOGUE SERVICES ORTHODOX: Bais Chabad of Birm- ingham/Bloomfield Hills: Moshe Polter, rabbi. 646-3010.
