Menem Meets
With U.S. Jews

New York (JTA) — Argen-
tine President Carlos Saul
Menem, meeting last week
with 14 members of the
American Jewish communi-
ty, pledged his determina-
tion to maintain friendly re-
lations with the Jewish
community, both at home
and throughout the world.
He also announced he
would be traveling to Israel
early next year, possibly in
January or February, and
would like very much to be
of help in facilitating the
Middle East peace process.
The Argentine president
has been working to
strengthen his ties to the
Jewish community in
Argentina, which is believed
to number around 225,000.
Menem, who is of Syrian
parentage, pointed out to the
Jewish leaders that his im-
migrant background helped
him understand and respect
the Jewish community in
Argentina..

many years.

Spain Honors
Israeli Prof

Jerusalem — Prof. Haim
Beinart, Bernard Cherrick
Professor of the History of the
Jewish People at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, has
become the first Israeli to be
_awarded an honorary Ph.D.
by Complutense University of
Madrid.
Prof. Beinart was awarded
the honor in recognition of his
scholarly research on the
history of Spanish Jewry.
Prof. Beinart has had many
scholarly contacts with
Spain, beginning in 1951
when he did research there in
preparation for his doctoral
thesis. He is a corresponding
member of the Royal
Academy of the History of
Spain.
In 1986 Prof. Beinart was
named the first winner of the
Three-Culture Prize
(Judaism, Christianity and
Islam) of the city of Cordoba.
