centuries, many Jews were
more concerned about how to
behave, rather than the
theological questions revolv-
ing around the authenticity
of revelation at Sinai and
the credence of the Biblical
account of creation in light
of scientific findings.
Hertzberg writes admir-
ingly of the Lubavitcher
rebbe, who has crafted "an
account of creation... that is
clear, consistent and com-
prehensible." The Rebbe
claims that the world was
created less than 6,000 years
ago exactly as described in
Genesis. Dinosaurs' remains
were placed "by the Creator
as snares and delusions to
test people's faith."

"You either believe [the
rebbe] or you don't," writes
Hertzberg, but he "has had
the courage of not hiding
behind obfuscations. He is
the only contemporary Or-
thodox theologian I have
read who does not shilly-
shally on this fundamental
point, or even on a more fun-
damental point, the content
of the revelation at Sinai."

Bad Things Happen to Good
People and When All You've
Ever Wanted Isn't Enough.

In his new book, observes
Newsweek, Kushner's "most
compelling argument" for
the human need for religion
is "not surprisingly, familiar
— that only religion provides
answers that enable to con-
front their morality."
"Still, Kushner doesn't
always parrot Orthodox
views," continues Mark
Starr of Newsweek. "Unlike
most Jewish religious
thinkers, he is preoccupied
with what God is rather
than what God demands.
Moreover, his concept of a
nonomnipotent diety — one
not directly responsible for
all the world's woes — di-
verges from both the Jewish
and Christian
mainstreams." ❑

Another Great
Communicator?

He may be neither a
"great scholar" nor a
theologian, according to
Newsweek, so perhaps the
best assessment of the rabbi
and best-selling author,
Harold Kushner, is his own:
An effective communicator
"who hears people's ques-
tions and puts religious an-
swers in terms they can res-
pond to."
The newsmagazine's pro-
file of Kushner appears upon
the release of his third book,
Who Needs God. Kushner's
