Wyden Eyes Hatfield's

Republican, would seem a
sure bet to win support from
the pro-Israel community
since he has a reputation as
a strong supporter of Israel,
and his opponent has long
been a thorn in the side of
many pro-Israel groups.

But Wyden's unannounced
candidacy is being regarded
with caution by pro-Israel
activists, mainly because a
race against Hatfield would
be extremely expensive —
upwards of $3 million. A
good proportion of that
would have to come from the
pro-Israel political action
committees, and from big
Jewish givers.
Wyden is caught in a kind
of vicious circle; to get com-
mitments from big spenders,
he needs to show that he has
a good chance of unseating
Hatfield. But the only way to
make that case is to show a
long list of committed do-
nors.
Pro-Israel strategists are
also concerned about the
image created by backing a
failed candidate. "If you give
the impression of going all-
out for a candidate, and he
doesn't make it, you give the
impression of weakness,"
said one top pro-Israel ac-
tivist. "In Wyden's case, this
will make it somewhat
difficult for him to really
mobilize pro-Israel support."

Lawmakers Interested
In Rubitsky Case

Two Wisconsin legislators
have become interested in
the case of David Rubitsky.
During fierce fighting in the
New Guinea jungles, Rubit-
sky single-handedly killed
up to 600 Japanese soldiers
after his comrades in a
bunker fled the Japanese
onslaught — hurling anti-
Semitic epithets as they left.
Rubitsky's actions were
credited with saving his unit
from a major military
disaster.
Rubitsky later felt great
remorse over his actions.
And the Congressional
Medal of Honor, promised by
several high-ranking officers
on the scene, was denied him
because of the company
commander's opinion that
no Jew should receive the
nation's highest military
honor.
Three years ago, Rubitsky,
at the urging of his former

comrades, began the ardu-
ous process of seeking the
medial .
"There have been some
verification problems," said
Herb Rosenbleeth, national
commander of the Jewish
War Veterans, a group that
has come to Rubitsky's aid.
"Time is always needed to
research a complicated case
like this. We had hoped it
would have gone a little
quicker."
The two lawmakers who
have taken an interest in the
case are Rep. Les Aspin, D-
Wis., who is chairman of the
House armed services com-
mittee; and Sen. Herbert
Kohl, D-Wis., who secured
the services of the Secret
Service and the Library of
Congress to verify
photographs critical to
Rubitsky's case.
A decision is expected by
early November. ❑
