During a three-month visit last year, time he had set aside to study Talmud and history, he was asked to tour the country as a substance abuse expert. Hashish, opium and cocaine are the major drugs used and according to Twerski there are about 20,000 hard core addicts and 200,000 Israelis who use drugs fairly often. Twerski says 87 percent of prisoners released from Israeli jails were there for drug offenses. Drug treat- ment facilities don't seem to be able to handle the growing drug crisis. As a result, Twer- ski has been working on a pilot project, hoping to imple- ment a program when he returns to Israel in January. When Twerski is not doctor- ing or speaking, he is writing. Topics include books on Jewish thought, psychiatry, self-exploration, lessons he learned from his father and, most recently, a collaborative effort with "Peanuts" car- toonist Charles Schultz. "When I was teaching residents I would often find `Peanuts' strips which in four frames could better sum up a psychological concept than I could in 20 minutes of lec- tures," Twerski says. Having used Schultz' materials for years, Twerski contacted the cartoonist's publisher and a match was made. A compilation of Schultz strips with Twerski commen- tary, When Do the Good Things Start?, was born. A se- quel will be released in the spring as will two other volumes, Jewish Living Can Enhance Happiness and Ad- dictive Thinking: How Ad- dicts Think. Twerski says jokingly that his "addiction" to writing is not dissimilar to the conpul- sion so many of his patients experience. "With all the 12-step pro- grams in existence to help people deal with problems, perhaps someone will recognize the need for an Author's Anonymous," he says. ❑ On The Boardwalk • 6919 Orchard Lake Road • W Bloomfield • 855.5528 Proudly Presents The Fashions Of KARL LOGAN 1988 California Designer of The Year Among The Variety of Styles To Be Shown By Begadim At The CITY OF HOPE GLAMORAMA FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA THIS WEDNESDAY h ADAT SHALOM SYNAGOGUE, Middlebelt and No rt.western Sale 4 -4rn, HUGE SELECTION OF TOWELS • COMFORTERS BEDSPREADS • SHEETS MARKED DOWN DRASTICALLY!! • Fieldcrest • Springmaid • Martex • Dakato • India Ink Regal Rugs Bath Accessories Shower Curtains SEVENTH HEAVEN Hunters Square • Orchard Lake at 14 Mile rf- 1 855-3777 ACUVUEY The contact lens you never clean.
