In his book — excerpts of which have appeared in many Jewish publications, in- cluding The Detroit Jewish News — Friedman has por- trayed himself as a longtime, ardent supporter of Israel who was sent to the Middle East as a reporter and became disillusioned when he saw Israel's blemishes up close. The truth is that Friedman was an outspoken critic of Israel long before the New York Times sent him to be its correspondent in Beirut and Jerusalem. In 1974, while a student at Brandeis Universi- ty, Friedman was one of the leaders of a campus organiza- tion called the Mideast Peace Group. He and other leaders of this group signed a letter, which was published in The Brandeis Justice in 1974, in which they demanded that Israel negotiate with the Palestine Liberation Organi- zation and denounced American Jewry for opposing Yassir Arafat's appearance at the United Nations that year. (Keep in mind that this episode took place 15 years before Arafat started posing as a "moderate.") In other words, Friedman has gone out of his way to pro- mote an account of his political evolution which is patently false. Until Fried- man offers an explanation, the public can only speculate as to his motives for such behavior. Bertram Korn, Jr. Philadelphia Regional Director Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America Why Do Jews Support Gay Rights? Oh No! Not another pro- homosexual article in The Jewish News! ("Communal Homophobia and Our Gay Jews," Oct. 13.) The problem I see with Gay Rights is it is trying to make a cause celebre out of an avairah. What makes homosexuality any different than adultery or incest or any of the other sexual prohibi- tions in Chapter 18 of Leviticus? Yet we don't see "Adultery Pride" or "Incest Rights" parades and cam- paigns! Perhaps those pathetic individuals involved in these abhorrent actions at least realize it is wrong and (to their credit) still feel a sense of shame and embarrassment. Is it because of AIDS? While, of course, we have corn- passion for anyone who is sick, I've yet to see a VD Quilt or a Syphillis Sing-In! Why in this case are we being so pro- pagandized into believing that black is white? I don't go for this excuse that gays "have no choice" and "should not be condemn- ed for something they cannot control." The essence of life is free choice and Judaism is based on the person's ability to control his urges and make the right choices. If not for this, the human would be no different than an animal. We can control whether or not we will eat a ham sandwich, whether we will eat at all on Yom Kippur (even though we were "created" to get hungry), whether or not we will work on Shabbat, and, of course, we can likewise con- trol our sexual relationships — heterosexual as well as homosexual. We only need choose to do so. Of course, as Jews we must love all of our fellow Jews despite whatever shortcom- ings they may have. This does not mean, however, that we need to approve of or accept their wrongful actions. In fact, this mitzvah of loving your fellow follows directly after the mitzvah of giving rebuke to a wrong-doer. Parents of gays, take note (and parents of intermarried children too, for that matter): it is a lousy parent who sees his child run into the street and doesn't potch that child! If your child is doing something wrong and harm- ful to his or her physical and/or spiritual well being, your disapproval and non- acceptance just may be a greater sign of loving and car- ing than a laisse faire at- titude of "well, whatever makes my child happy is ok with me." Susan Tawil Oak Park I NEWS Immimin 4.5 Million Now In Israel Jerusalem (JTA) — On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the population figure for Israel stood at 4,530,000 Israelis, with 81.6 percent of the population being Jewish, ac- cording to the Central Bu- reau of Statistics. In addition, some 17,000 immigrants came to Israel this year, an increase of 30 percent compared to last year. And for the first time in the history of the state, the number of births was higher than 100,000.
