Kesher, a group for umar-
ried Conservative Jews ages
25-45 which is patterned
after similar groups in
Washington, D.C., and New
Jersey, got underway last
year and is continuing to
evolve, according to Rabbi
Elliott Pachter of Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
"We have tried to create a
real 'normal' type
synagogue situation," said
Rabbi Pachter who, along
with Rabbi Bill Gershon of
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek, is liaison to Kesher's
sponsors, the Conservative
Rabbis of Metropolitan
Detroit. "Too often, such
programs have 'single'
written all over them. In our
program, singles can come
on Friday night and daven
in the service, thereby doing
things that Jews tradi-
tionally do, and at the same
time meet, other single peo-
ple."
"We're not into offering
social functions such as
dances and parties, but
rather Jewish experiences
for singles," added Rabbi
Gershon. "Even if singles
come and don't meet anyone,
they. can still feel good about
themselves because they at-
tended an authentic Jewish
function."
Kesher offers monthly
Friday night singles services
at sponsoring synagogues on
a rotating basis. Each ser-
vice is followed by a lecture
or workshop and an oneg
Shabbat.
Rabbi Pachter said
Kesher's long range goals
include creating separate,
though somewhat overlapp-
ing, age groups, to better
serve specific needs; a paid
administrator to handle
scheduling and programm-
ing, and an appeal to the
Jewish Welfare Federation
for funding. Alicia Nelson,
wife of Rabbi David Nelson
of Congregation Beth
Shalom, is volunteer coor-
dinator for Kesher.
"We're at the crossroads
right now," Rabbi Pachter
said. "We've done four pro-
grams and had success (at-
tendance varied between 80
and 150 people) and we're
now at the point of seriously
considering making this a
well-organized program."
