SINGLE LIFE BREAK DH A E N I A NS T o Revived by some nourishing nibbles, Detroiters end Yom Kippur's fasting on the Center's dance floor. RICHARD PEARL Gordon Smith and Jessica Rose find the lively music - to their liking. I Staff Writer Dancers enjoy a break from fast dancing with a slow tune from the band. he tables were laden with foods, beverages were being poured, the band was kicking out some hot rhythms and Detroit's Jewish singles were ready for some serious fun to end a day of serious fasting and introspection. That was the scene at the Maple/Drake Jewish Com- munity Center on Yom Kip- pur, Oct. 9, as nearly 400 singles ended the Day of Atonement with the annual Break The Fast Dance. With fresh fruit, vegetables, dip, chips, bagels, cakes and cookies assuaging their hunger; and wine, beer and pop slaking their thirst, singles ranging in age from the 20s to the 60s offered New Year 5750 greetings to old and new friends. Low lights and the contem- porary pop-rock blues sounds of Lee Fantely and the New Romance helped give Shiff- man Hall a festive at- mosphere. In the lobby, tables and chairs were available for those wishing a quieter place to visit. The next major dance on the singles agenda will be the Only Spot in Town Dance, scheduled for Dec. 24 at Maple/Drake. ❑ Top: Doug Swartz and Cheryl lwrey are happy the fasting's over.
