The first program of the
1989 fall series of the Max
Hart Lectureship will be
presented Nov. 3 following 8
p.m. services. This series of
three lectues, to be held at
Temple Beth El in Flint, are
free and open to the public.
The presentations are a
cooperative venture of the
Adult Education Committee
of Thmple Beth El and the
Judaic Studies Program of
the University of Michigan.
On Nov. 3 Dr: Enoch Brater,
professor of English and
theater, will speak on "Jews
and Being Jewish in the
American Theater!' He will
discuss the rise of a nativist
American theater at the end
of the 19th century as it coin-
cides historically with the ar-
rival of a large Eastern Euro-
pean presence in the metro-
politan centers of the United
States. The crossover from the
Yiddish theater in New York —
to mainstream Broadway will
be highlighted. Brater will
trace the maturity of the
Jewish contribution to
American theater as it
develops in the work of Elmer
Rice, George Kaufman, Clif-
ford Odets, Arthur Miller and
contemporary figures in-
cluding David Mamet and
Wend Wasserstein, as well as
the Group Theater and the
Fereal Theater Project.
Dr. Mashey Bernstein, who
lectures in English at the
University of Michigan, will
be the second guest speaker

8 p.m. Nov. 10. He holds
degrees in education from
Trinity College, Dublin, and
in American-Jewish liter-
ature from the University of
California. His articles have
appeared in Newsweek, The
Christian Science Monitor
and the London Jewish

Bernstein has written ar-
ticles including the award-
winning "Problems of a
Jewish Bodybuilder" and
"Good Pumping with Dr.
Ruth!" He will speak on "Now
that We Are Here, What Do
We Do?: The Past, Present
and Future of the American-
Jewish Novel?'

At 11 a.m. Nov. 19, Dr.
Anita Norich, who teaches in
the department of English
and the Judaic Studies Pro-
gram, will be the final guest
lecturer. A Temple sisterhood
luncheon and meeting will
follow at noon.
Novich earned her doc-
torate in Victorian literature
at Columbia University, then
pursued post-doctoral studies
in Yiddish at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem. She
has published and lectured
widely on Yiddish literature
and Jewish literature in
American and Holocaust
studies. Her topic will be
"The Family in American
Jewish Fiction: Mother,
Mother-tongue and
Motherland!"

Adat Shalom Weekend
Features Steven Cohen

Professor Steven M. Cohen
will lead a fall encounter
weekend at Adat Shalom
Synagogue, Oct. 27 through
Oct. 29. A professor of
sociology at Queens College
and an expert on demography,
Cohen will focus on a number
of subjects related to the
"Who Is A Jew?" issue.
On Oct. 27, Cohen will
speak at a noon class and
lunch on "Are American and
Israeli Jews Drifting Apart?
— Two Worlds - of Judaism!'
That evening at a new
member dinner he will ad-
dress "The Jewish Family:
Myths and Reality!'
Cohen will speak at Oct. 28
Shabbat morning services on
"Pluralism — A Religious
Challenge For Jews." A
catered luncheon will be
served.
The weekend will conclude

with an 11 a.m. brunch on
Oct. 29, sponsred by the Adat
Shalom Men's Club. At that
time, Cohen will explore
"Assimilation or Revival? The
Future of American Jewry!'
