BACKGROUND: Robert Sokol grew up in
Rochester, N.Y. His father is a
businessman who invented the concept
of clothing for big and tall men and has
a chain of clothing stores in that field.
His mother is very artistic and enjoys
painting.
Sokol attended Sunday school for 12
years. "I actually liked it," recalls
Sokol. He remembers being studious as
a child and read five encyclopedias as a
hobby. During his teenage years, he was
active in high school theater.
Growing up near the University of
Rochester, Sokol was influenced by
academia. When his parents' friends
from the school of music at the
university visited, he listened
attentively. He plays piano and
considers music his second love. His
wife is his first love and he is proud
that they are celebrating their 25th
wedding anniversary.
Sokol has many interests that span
the worlds of science and art. He
collects records, art, army patches and
enjoys using the computer to interpret
scientific data. His cultural heroes are
Winston Churchill, Beethoven and John
Wayne.
At the University of Rochester he
majored in philosophy. After three years
of college, he took a comprehensive
exam to finish his course work for his
degree and then attended medical
school at the University of Rochester.
He completed his internship and
residency programs at Washington
University in St. Louis. Although his
schedule was full as a physician, he still
managed to participate in the theater
as a photographer for a professional
theatrical company in St. Louis.
After his service in the United
States Air Force as a captain, he
continued to specialize in obstetrics and
gynecology. Sokol's area of expertise is
prenatal brain damage, and he is known
for his studies on alcohol-related birth
defects. He has over 500 papers
published.
After being a professor at Case
Western Reserve University for a
decade, he was recruited to Detroit as
professor and chairman of the
department of obstetrics and gynecology
at Wayne State University. "After my
second visit here, I knew I wanted to
live in Detroit. I love that tire on the
drive in from the airport. That's our
equivalent of the Eiffel Tower."
In April 1989, Sokol was named
dean of the medical school at Wayne
State University after serving as
interim dean for nearly a year. WSU
has one of the largest medical schools in
the country, with more than $30 million
in research annually. Sokol's challenges
are to maintain the high academic
standards at the school and continue
the pattern of growth.
