percent of my time in this
part of the world," he says. "It
will mean sometimes that I
need to take a short trip
somewhere."
Several of those short trips
will be to coach, conduct or
play with members of the
Israel Chamber Orchestra, of
which he is the fifth music
director. He says the reason
he got involved with the
chamber orchestra was to con-
tinue "developing new tastes
through learning different
and new music."
"I think a new generation
of teachers has to emerge in
Israel, and one of my goals
was to train or to put some of
that effort back into the coun-
try that has raised me," he
says. "I really would like to do
something in that country
that will show it not only in
the spotlight of wars and con-
flicts, but also in the spotlight
of cultural development.
Mintz continues, "It seems
to me when people talk about
that part of the world, they
talk about destruction, and I
don't think there's only
destruction there. There's a
great development, too, that
goes on. If one concentrates
on culture, perhaps one can
divert other people's minds
(from) concentrating on
destruction?'
He says the way to make
the Israel Chamber Orchestra
a more significant cultural
ambassador for Israel is
through constant refining of
the work and touring
internationally.
Mintz dismisses the notion
that international audiences
for classical music are dwindl-
ing, or that Bach and
Beethoven aren't attracting
younger listeners — the au-
dience that will eventually
become tomorrow's music
patrons.
"I've seen a lot of excite-
ment, for example, in Europe
for classical music recently,
among young people especial-
ly," says Mintz.
But a major concern among
performing arts directors in
the U.S. is that there aren't
enough young people suppor-
ting classical music, dance
and theater.
"I don't want to blame
anything on anybody, but it
might also be a question of
preference in education,"
Mintz continues. "I think
that if one nourishes and
cherishes certain traditions
and tries to upkeep them, one
would never be confined (lose
patronage)." ❑
