"So, working on these pro- ductions is fun for me. It's magic time." Another one of Gurwin's veterans is Dolores Shevlin, who will play the part of Glad Hand. "It's a cameo appearance, but the role is delightful," said Shevlin, who made her theater debut in the late 1930s at age 8 when she played Goldilocks in Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Like Zatkin, Shevlin, a longtime-member of the Farmington Players, hooked up with Gurwin 13 years ago when she was on the technical and publicity staffs of the first Nancy Gurwin Production, I Do! I Dol. Since then, the Farmington Hills resident has appeared in several of Gurwin's shows. She has also directed pro- ductions for the Farmington Players. Sitting in the director's chair for West Side Story is Kathi Bush of Bloomfield Hills. "She is just wonder- ful," Gurwin said. "Kathi choreographed Fiddler on the Roof, Annie Get Your Gun and Snoopy for me. She's doing both duties for this show, and I think it's a real plus for us." Assisting Bush with the choreography is Michael Pilon of West Bloomfield; he will also portray Bernardo, Maria's brother, a Shark _ . "It's a great dancing role, a part I've always wanted to play," he said. Pilon has choreographed and appeared in several shows for Detroit-area dinner and community theaters. When he's not in class at Oakland Communi- ty College, Pilon teaches aerobics at an area health club and works for a hotel. Also of West Bloomfield is 10th-grader Lisa Melinn, who will appear as Consuelo. Melinn performed in the NGP Annie Get Your Gun and has acted in several pro- ductions with a community theater in Troy. The past two summers, she. attended Cranbrook Theater School and recently studied drama from Gurwin. Melinn said West Side's cast members are all very friendly. "They are really supportive. If you have a problem, they're the first to help you out and give you a hand. That's really great." There is, of course, one person the Jets don't care to help, and he is the much taunted Officer Krupke, played by Phil Jakey, who appeared in several NGPs, including Annie Get Your Dawn Hamblin and Danny Gurwin Gun and Diary of Anne Frank. Other adults in the cast in- clude Michael Kowal, who will portray Lt. Schrank, while Tony's confidant, Doc, will be played by Gary Tem- ple. "I just got into the musical comedy thing the last couple of years when I was in Birm- ingham Players' Damn Yankees," Temple said. "Before that, my interest was basically in classical music. Temple, who teaches math and science at a junior high school in Plymouth, has appeared in a handful of Gurwin Productions, in- cluding Funny Girl, Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy, where he starred opposite Nancy. In the recent NGP production of Guys and Dolls, he portrayed Nicely Nicely. Although Temple has per- formed with other communi- ty theaters, he finds Gur- win's shows exciting and a challenge. But, he admits, "I think here you're put under a little more pressure, so you've got to do your homework and get it done before rehearsals . . ." Not only does Stefani Bindes, the youngest cast member, do her (West Side) homework before play prac- tice, but the 12-year-old also cracks the school books when she's not needed on stage during rehearsals. Bindes, a student at Holmes Junior High School in Livonia, will portray Anybodys, the confused girl who longs to be a Jet. "I've never done anything big like this, and it's really fun," she said. Like Bindes, Marci and Howard Freeman of Southfield will also make their NGP debut. Howard Will portray A-Rab, a Jet, while his older sister takes "They are really supportive. If you have a problem, they're the first to help you out and give you a hand." on the role of Graziella, one of the Jet's girls. The show's other actors in- clude Jesse Heindle (Riff), Jason Scott (Action), Marc Bleyer (Baby John), Tony Casarta (Diesel), Lorie Horowitz (Velma), Jennifer Letzer (Minnie), Mike Dem- in g (Chino), Daryl Ziegelman (Pepe), Kenny Peurasaari (Indio), Laura Rogers (Anita), Lisa Ouelette (Rosalia) and Michelle Greenstein (Teresita). The show's music director is Lee George, who has held this role for recent NGPs —
