THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA
Metropolitan Detroit District

Israeli films with any
political content are left-
wing," says Eitan Green, one
of Israel's best known film
directors and a professor of
cinema at 1bl Aviv Universi-
ty. "I can't think of a so-called
patriotic movie since
Menachem Golan's film about
the rescue at Entebbe. In
America, during Viet Nam,
even when the intelligentsia
opposed the war, there were
popular movies, such as The
Green Berets, that glorified it.
But we don't have a John
Wayne."
Popular music is equally
dominated by the doves. A
generation ago, Israeli hits
were often patriotic tunes,
known as "Jewish Agency
songs." Today, soft-rock pro-
test songs against Israeli
behavior during the intifada
are common and a few, by
stars such as Chava Alber-
stein, Nurit Gallron and Si
Hyman, have been major hits.
No song extolling the soldiers
or blaming the rock-throwers
has yet emerged.
Experts and critics here
agree that the left has almost
total control over popular
culture, but they disagree
about why. Some believe that
the right-wing simply isn't
creative.
"I get sent manuscripts all
the time, and most of them
are bad," says Deborah Har-
ris. "But, good or bad, all of
them are dovish. I've never
even been sent a hawkish
novel. I don't think they ex-
ist."
According to Michael
Handelzaltz, drama critic for
the prestigious Ha'aretz
newspaper, there are some
hawkish plays, but they are
not produced because they
aren't good enough. "The
reason that right-wing
theater isn't interesting is
because the hawks have no
doubts about anything," he
says. "Leftists are constantly
questioning, and that makes
for worthwhile theater."
Some of the critics ascribe
the lack of right-wing
creativity to alienation.
"Even during Viet Nam, peo-
ple who smoked marijuana
and had long hair and spit on
the flag, still, in their hearts,
loved America," says Eitan
Green. "Here, we're less
patriotic. People here feel that
they have no reason to be
proud of their country."
Right-wingers are upset by
their obvious failure to ar-
ticulate their views, and
many blame the 'left wing
mafia' for exerting a form of
censorship.
"There are plenty of
creative people on the right,"
says Shlomo Kor, a journalist
who serves as the Deputy
