writers were sitting
around Tel Aviv's
Cafe Tamar, a hotbed of
Israel's cultural establish-
ment, sipping coffee and
discussing a new art exhibit,
scheduled as a protest against
Israeli control of the - West
Bank - and Gaza.
"Have there been any ex-
hibits protesting against the
intifada?" asked a curious
reporter. "Paintings by people
who favor the settlers, that
sort of thing?"
The questions elicited a
long silence. "I don't think
so," said a writer who is close
to the art world. "In fact, I
can't say that I know any
right-wing painters. They
stick to decorating ketubahs.
These days, all the artists are
doves."
For more than a decade,
election results and opinion
polls have demonstrated that
the Israeli public is almost
equally divided between
hawks, who favor keeping the
West Bank and Gaza, and
doves, who would like to

return most or all of it. But
among those who produce
Israel's popular culture —
novelists, playwrights, song
writers, film makers, painters
and other members of the
creative intelligentsia —
there is something very much
like unanimity.
"If you take the 100 leading
novelists in this country, 99 of
them are' leftists," said
Deborah Harris, an Ameri-
can-born literary agent who
represents several of Israel's
best known writers. "David
Grossman, A.B. Yehoshua,
Amos Oz, Meir Shalev, you
name them.. On the right,
there is Moshe Shamir, and
that's about all. The simple
truth is that there are no im-
portant hawkish novelists."
At the recent Jerusalem
Film Festival, a movie called
Green Fields, which is a bit-
ter indictment of Israeli oc-
cupation of the West Bank
and the moral corruption of
Israeli society, was awarded
first prize. The winner for the
best short film was Miklat,
the story of the exploitation of
Arab workers in Israeli cities.
Both are representative of the
general trend in local cinema.
