ing that church leaders often censored what appeared to be questionable mail Yet the principal quickly learned of Mordechai's con- tinuing interest in Judaism, and of her impending meeting with a represen- tative of the Lubavitch Center. "He was so angry he was shaking from head to toe," Mordechai says. "He kept telling me 'You're playing with fire!' and 'There's something wrong with your soul!'" Though terrified, Mordechai met with the rabbi. It was a happy meeting, she recalls. "I even laughed -- something I couldn't remember having done in years. We had been taught that laughter was immodest." The rabbi wanted to house Mordechai for several weeks in a Jewish home. She prom- ised to call if interested. When she returned to the seminary, Mordechai made a last appeal to Jesus. She prayed fervently. "I didn't want a miracle. All I was asking for was quiet assurance in the depth of my soul. I was desperately searching for anything," she says. The principal warned her she had not repented enough. He told her she must give a sermon before her fellow students. Mordechai knew it was time to leave. With only a five-pound ($7.50) note she had hidden years ago, Mordechai hid in an office at the seminary. She slept there Saturday night, not wanting to bother the Lubavitch rabbi on Shabbat. On Sunday morning, she called him. The rabbi's wife said he was davening. Mordechai said she would wait until 9 a.m. The phone rang at 8:55. Moments later, Mordechai was out the door and on her way to the rabbi. She ran down the streets. Faster and faster. "Something burst from the depths of my life." She stopped when she got to his home. W hat was supposed to be a three-day visit with a Jewish fami- ly in London turned into nine months for Mordechai. Afterward, she studied in a yeshiva in Israel, where she met her husband. Three years ago she settled in New York with her husband and three sons.
