Michigan, will celebrate the
inauguration of the Preston
R. Tisch Professorship of
Judaic Studies, Nov. 1.
Dr. Zvi Y. Gitelman, who
was recently named the first
incumbent of the Tisch Pro-
fessorship, will deliver the in-
augural lecture at 4:30 p.m.
in the Rackham Am-
phitheatre on the Ann Arbor
campus.
His topic will be "Shaping
Jewish Culture and Identity
in the Soviet Union and
Eastern Europe: The State as
Social Engineer?' A reception
will follow.
A panel discussion will be
held on "The Immpact of the
State on National Identity in
Eastern and Western
Europe," 8 p.m., at the U of M
alumni Center.
